"No One's Better Sake" as written by and Binki Shapiro Fabrizio Moretti....
No One's Better Side
-------------------------
One thought, has me turning back
A dozen point the other way
We act upon desire
To each a hand for hire
And patience isn't worth the wait

You've got knifes in your eyes
You would be happy not to change your mind
I can't defend you truly
When I worry about smoke instead of putting out the fire

And if we work it out
Chances abound we'd be standing around
for no one's better sake
(better say)
good-bye

What are we waiting for?
What are we waiting for?
What are we waiting for?
What are we waiting for?

What are we waiting for?
What are we waiting for?

What are we waiting for?

How faint might that light become
in focus but at miles away?
Although my position
Just gives you ammunition
be certain that I know my place

So is this how it ends
Oh with a whimper instead of bang
I can't defend you truly
When I worry about smoke instead of putting out the fire

And if we work it out
Chances abound we'd be standing around
for no one's better sake
(better say)
good-bye

We would be friends
if we'd try again
I'd take second place
just to end the race
for no one's better sake
(better say)
Good-bye

General Commenti think this is just about a relationship puttering out. and he's just wondering why they're waiting when they should just end it because they're just neither here nor there with each other. maybe they're both indifferent or their feelings for one another waver and it's on and off. and the relationship is just happening for the sake of nothing good or bad.

"One thought, has me turning back
A dozen point the other way"
I think this is during the relationship when you wanted the other person and when it finally happened it wasn't what you thought i would be so even though you know it's not working out you're still hanging on to them.

"And if we work it out
Chances are bound we'd be standing around
    for no one's better sake"
They most likely could work it out because nothing is really wrong between them. But if they did they'd be no better or worse.

And I think the line: "So is this how it ends. Oh with a whimper instead of bang" says a lot. i took it as INSTEAD of having a huge blow up fight or break up or someone cheating, like usual break-ups.. instead it was just a small whimper of it putting to an end.

    "I can't defend you truly"
I related these lyrics to a recent break-up i had that had no bang of an end and it just weakly ended.. and I saw this as saying no one really did anything wrong but no one did anything right, if that makes sense. And if after they're still friends and do care for the other and even though nothing along the lines of unfaithfulness happened, he's saying he can't truly defend the other person for the break-up because they didn't do anything right either.

"When I worry about smoke instead of putting out the fire"
I think my ex worried too much about "the smoke" as well. He didn't want to work things out so the first mini problem we had he just wanted to step back and end it immediately instead of working on us until a real issue (the "big fire") happened. Fear of reaching complications and ruining us perhaps.

    Well who knows..

My OpinionFrom my relationship experiences, this sounds like a break up song that is both painful but necessary. There is love there, but it's not doing anyone any good.

I was curious on your thoughts on this line: "I can't defend you truly
When I worry about smoke instead of putting out the fire"

General Comment"i worry about smoke instead of putting out the fire"

    story of my life.
i think the line has to deal with (in the context of this song) that maybe the person is too worried about the consequences and the little things instead of what's important or the task at hand. straying from the big picture?

General CommentGreat song, but I believe the last verse is:

    I'd take second place
    just to end the race
