"There Was A Time" as written by W. Axl Rose, Dizzy Reed, Paul H. Tobias and Tommy Stinson....
Broken glass and cigarettes,
Writing on the wall,
It was a bargain for the summer,
And I thought I had it all.
I was the one who gave you everything,
The one who took the fall,
You were the one who would do anything,
The one who can't recall
Where she was while she was sleeping,
In another woman's bed,
Or the doctors or the lawyers,
Or a stranger that she met.
If there's nothing I can gain from this,
Or anything at all,
It'd be the knowledge that ya gave me,
When I thought I had it all.

It was a long time with you,
It was a long time with me,
It'd be a long for anyone,
But looks like it's meant to be.

Social class and registers,
Cocaine in the hall,
All the way from California,
On the way beyond that stall.
To those non-negotiations
To simulate a call,
All the bad of learning evils and your ways around the laws that keep you

Up and sitting pretty,
On a pedestal of men
And now you're sleeping like an angel,
Near the man who reaped it in.

If there's something I can make of this,
Or anything at all,
It'd be the devil hates a loser and you thought you had it all.

It was a wrong time for you,
It was a wrong time for me,
It was the wrong time for everyone
But looks like I'm about to see for myself.

If I could go back in time to the place in my soul, there all alone
Lonely tear drops,
Ooh,are calling you.
But I don't wanna know it now,
'cause knowing you, it won't change a damn thing.
But there was a time.

Yeah, there was a time,
Didn't wanna know it all,
Didn't wanna know it all and
I don't wanna know it now

Oh,

Yeah, there was a time,
Didn't wanna know it all,
Didn't wanna know it all and
I don't wanna know it now,

Oh,
I would do anything for you,
There was a time,
I would do anything for you,
Oh,I would do anything for you,
There was a time.

There was a time,
Oh, I would do anything for you,
Oh, I would do anything for you
Yeah there was a time,
Didn't wanna know it all,
Didn't wanna know it all,
And I don't wanna know it now,
I would do anything for you,
There was a time, was a time

General CommentThis song is about stephanie seymour, clearly.
"It was a bargain for the summer
And I thought I had it all" -referring to their happier times together

"I was the one who gave you everything
The one who took the fall"
-referring to how he idolised her and gave her everthing but was the one left heartbroken by it all,

You were the one who would do anything
    The one who can’t recall
Where she was while she was sleepin'
    In another women’s bed
Or the doctor's or the lawyer's
Or the stranger that she met"
-she moved on as if he meant nothing. Axl believed she was cheating on him and she was known to be a bed-hopper who would sleep with anyone to get what she wanted.

    "Cocaine in the hall
    All the way from California"
-referring to the cocaine party stephanie threw at their house while axlw as in calfornia. he came back to the house and went crazy because stephanies son dylan was upstairs, huge fight followed and stephanie claim axl dragged her feet through broken glass in a rage "Broken glass and cigarettes" resulting in them splitting up.

And your ways around the laws- the way she go away with everything because she was a supermodel

"That keep you up and sitting pretty
On a pedestal or bed"- bed has been changed from 'men' again a reference to her supermodel status and how she just looks so pretty but really isnt nice

"And now you're sleeping like an angel"- very cleverly proving he's talking about stephanie. She was one of a few Victoria's secret Angel.
"Never mind who gave you head" sung you gave head, her cheating.

    "cause knowin' you
It won't change a damn thing
    But there was a time"
His teardrops and pain meant nothing to her, she went on and started her happy life with another man.

    "There was a time
I would do anything for you"
explaining how much he loved her, he would have done anything for her.

Axl's own favourite song, my favourite song, absolutely amazing, tells alot

Song MeaningI have my own idea about this song.

The woman is perfect, and he worships her, but she turns nasty and becomes manipulative, yet he tries to turn a blind eye to it, stick his head in the sand.

"Didn't want to know it all, didn't wanna know at all, and I don't wanna know it now."

But in spite of accepting this, he still loves her, be it because he feels he can do no better, or it's true love. Nonetheless, he pines over her.

"I would do anything for you, there was a time!"

It's an amazing song, meaning aside. The solo is incredible, and Axl's wailing near the end almost makes me want to cry. (In a good way.)

General Commentwonder that no-one has yet commended on this one

think the meanings obvious... a person he knows very well not being positively important enough anymore to care about...

but i wouldn't go so far to say it's about the rumoured thing between axl and slash

awesome song though... i'm allready happily waitin on the album which is supposed to come out this very month :D

General CommentSounds awesome, havent heard it but am trying to broaden my GnR collection lol, only really heard november rains heavens door and sweet child :P

Just recently broke up with my girlfriend and i think i can relate to this song, what i feel it's meaning is anyway.

It seems to me to be about breaking up with a girl after a long relationship where you shared everything, built yoour lives on eachother, but now it's all gone and they're thinking, maybe this isn't the right time to be together, maybe in the future but not now, and he still feels shite about it but keeps telling himself the same thing, but HAs to move on..or w.e :P

General CommentMy favorite on the album. Very descriptively details the demise of a relationship, possibly Seymour.
