"Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown on a Bad Bet" as written by Peter Wentz, Patrick Stump, Joseph Trohman and Andrew Hurley....
Mr. Sandman showing his beam
When he walks into the room
The walls lean in to listen
Surf out brain waves
Click back and forth like old headlights
Sniffing model glue again

Head like a steel trap
Wish I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't,
I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I don't
Just want to be a footnote in someone else's happiness.

Does your husband know the way that
The sunshine gleams from your wedding band?
Does he know the way to worship I know
Of the crickets that would convince me to call it a night?

I will never end up like him
Behind my back, I already am.
Keep a calendar, this way
You will always know.

The last time you came through,
Oh darling, I know what you're going through.
The last time you came through,
Oh darling, oh darling, oh darling

Tempest in a teacup,
Get unique.
Peroxide Princess shine like shark teeth
It's a sign, (it's a sign)
It's a sign, (it's a sign)
It's a sign, what if you peaked early.

Does your husband know the way that
The sunshine gleams from your wedding band?
Does he know the way, does he know the way
Of the crickets that would convince me to call it a night?

Does he, does he know the way to worship our love?
Does your husband know the way
That the sunshine gleams from your wedding band?

But, I will never end up like him.
Behind my back, I already am.
Keep a calendar, this way you will always know.

The last time you came through
Oh darling, I know what you're going through.
The last time you came through,
Oh darling, oh darling, oh darling

Does your husband know?
Does your husband know?
Does your husband know?

Does he know?
Does he know?
Does he know?

But, I will never end up like him.
Behind my back I already am.
Keep a calendar, this way you will always know.

Oh, the last time you came through,
Oh darling, I know what you're going through.
Oh, the last time you came through,
Oh darling, I know what you're going through.

Song MeaningThis song is definitely about a married woman cheating on her husband. I'll show what I found

    "Mr. Sandman showing his beam"
in the song Mr. Sandman, they ask sandman to send them a man to them "turn on your magic beam"

    another point "peroxide princess"
a girl who dyes her hair blonde using peroxide and parties a lot.

"shines like shark teeth" the shark symbolizes doubts, worries, bad moods and resentment.
TEETH symbolize something permanent "in this case marriage" so shark teeth is to say the marriage isn't going well

"it's a sign, what if you peaked early" is to say the marriage wasn't meant to be.

the chorus shows the other man is in love with the woman but she may not be in love with him.

General CommentA woman is cheating on her husband with the speaker in this song. He falls in love with her and thinks she'd never turn on him like she did on her husband (even though she is already cheating on him as well). She plays on his feelings to get what she wants ("oh darlin' I know what you're going through").

General Commentto grayce's comment on how the song is about a woman cheating on her husband with the speaker.. personally i don't think this is it.

"does your husband know the way the sunshine gleams from your wedding band" means does your husband know that you (his wife) like to show off your ring and care more about the superficial side of the marriage rather than the more deep meaningful relationship it is supposed to bring. I.e. the speaker is asking the woman if her husband knows that she is in it for the fame and money the marriage brings with it.

"I will never end up like him, behind my back i already am, keep a calendar this way you will always know"

the speaker doesn't want to be like the husband. He doesn't want to marry someone because they like his money or fame etc. But the speaker (guy who is already married, possibly pete idk) is afraid that he may end up like 'the husband' and it won't be his wife's fault, but his. Maybe he feels he is enjoying the fame/glory too much instead of concentrating on the real meaning of the relationship and having this shitty superificial relationship and is insecure about it,
The whole 'keep a calendar...' is to say that maybe it is a matter of time before it happens, maybe not.
Idk, that's my take on it. I love this song though. Its so strange listening to EOWYG and then this...
i love how rapidly their music styles change.

General CommentI'd like to add that as much as I try to dislike Fall Out Boy for what they've become, I can't turn my back on them because they continuously reinvent themselves in a positive way and continue making catchy, witty and all around smart pop-rock music.

I still can't bring myself to like Pete, though. I've lost all respect for the guy in the last couple of years - he's everything Fall Out Boy never represented in their earlier days.

Patrick is one of my favorite musicians these days, though.

General CommentMr. Sandman showing his beam, when he walks into the room the walls lean in to listen
Surf out blank waves, clicking back and forth like old headlights, - the sandman thing is a refrence to losing sleep again. hence he's surfing out blank waves... channel surfing. clicking through the channels light up the room like old headlights. almost anyone with insomnia has been there. late at night when its nothing but bad t.v. yet you keep surfing.

sniffing bottled you again. - Sniffing her perfume, thinking of her, or if the song does say glue i would guess like getting high from the thought of her, or feeling high from lack of sleep

    Head like a steel trap, wish I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I don't...
Just want to be a footnote in someone else's happiness. - wishing he wasnt just a side to her happiness when the marriage is her full course.

Does your husband know the way that the sunshine gleams from your wedding band? - i thinnk this could be either him feeling guilty, but perhaps with a touch of "Does he notice all the small things that i love?"

Does he know the way, does he know the way of the crickets that would convince me to call it a night? - ummm im between what was said before about it being A. a lack of talking and taking his cue to leave or B. jimminy cricket. a conciounse.

I will never end up like him
Behind my back, I already am. - technically isnt she already cheating on him with her husband?

Keep a calendar, this way you will always know.

The last time you came through, - knowing the last time she came and saw the speaker.

Oh darling, I know what you're going through. - maybe he tells her he hates the thought of her with him and shes telling him she hates it and that the sneaking around is driving her crazy too.

The last time you came through,
Oh darling, oh darling, oh darling... - her words running through his head.

Tempest in a teacup, - like a big thing in a small package?
    Get unique.
Peroxide Princess shine like shark teeth - maybe that it burns?
    It's a sign, (it's a sign)
    It's a sign, (it's a sign)
It's a sign, what if you peaked early. - maybe their relationship or her marriage coming to an end or peaking early. im not sure, i have trouble with this verse.

Does your husband know the way that the sunshine gleams from your wedding band?
Does he know the way, does he know the way of the crickets that would convince me to call it a night?

Does he, does he know the way to worship our love? - once again a "Does he love you the way i love you?"
Does your husband know the way that the sunshine gleams from your wedding band?

Well, I will never end up like him.
Behind my back, I already am.
Keep a calendar, this way you will always know.

    Last time you came through,
Oh darling, I know what you're going through.
    Last time you came through,
Oh darling, oh darling, oh darling...

Does your husband know? Does your husband know? Does your husband know? Oh oh oh, whoa-oh...
Does he know? Does he know, does he know? Whoa-ah-ah-ah-ah, oh oh, oh

I will never end up like him.
Behind my back I already am.
Keep a calendar, this way you will always know.

Oh, the last time you came through,
Oh darling, I know what you're going through.
The last time you came through,
Oh, darling I know what you're going through.

General CommentOk think about it this way........

The title is about Pete Rose and how he cheated, but then Pete Rose being cheated out of a spot in the hall of fame.

"Well, I will never end up like him.
Behind my back, I already am."

The speaker is obviously sleeping with this married woman and saying he will never be cheated on but just like Pete Rose, he loses something and that is.... he will never have her.

    As for....
"Head like a steel trap, wish I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't," - this is like Pete Rose wishing he never did it...... or maybe for the speaker as well because he goes on to say.... "I don't just want to be a footnote in someone else's happiness."

    "mr. sandman showing his beam
when he walks into the room the walls lean in to listen
serve out bright waves click back and forth
like old headlights sniffing all of you again" - I agree with what people said before.... this is about insomnia and channel surfing.

    "It's a sign, (it's a sign)
    It's a sign, (it's a sign)
It's a sign, what if you peaked early." - I think this is the speaker asking the married woman if maybe she got married to early.

General CommentI definitely think this song is about a woman having an affair with someone (the narrator). I got that the first time I heard it, with the lines:
"Does your husband know (the way)
That the sunshine gleams from your wedding ring?"
Husband + wedding ring automatically made me think affair, and the rest of the song made me think that the narrator was completely and hopelessly in love with the woman.

General CommentFirstly, I've listened to this song well over a thousand times and I still know as much about the meaning as I did when I first heard it.
Here as my best guess as to what it may be about:

    Mr. Sandman showing his beam
When he walks into the room the walls lean in to listen
Surfed out brain waves flick back and forth
Like old headlights sniffing model glue again

Mr.Sandman introduces himself in the first verse an ideal man or "the perfect guy" (as asap4now said) and is the speaker for the rest of the song.

    Head like a steel trap
    Wish I didn't I didn't I didn't I didn't I didn't I didn't I didn't
I don't just want to be a footnote in someone else's happiness

The speaker is in love with a married woman and because of this, he knows that he can never play a bigger role in her life.

Does your husband know the way that
the sunshine gleams from your wedding band?

He is also saying that he is better for her than the husband because he is a "prefect guy" who appreciates and admires her more.

    Does he know the way
    Does he know the way
Of the crickets that would convince me to call it a night?
But I will never end up like him
Behind my back I already am
Keep a calendar, this way you will always know

The last time you came through
Oh darling I know what you're going through
The last time you came through
    Oh darling
    Oh darling
    Oh darling...

This part of the song suggests that the speaker is in a relationship with someone else, and that by seeing each other, both the speaker and the woman are cheating on their partners (the woman doesn't know this), hence "I know what you're going through". The speaker is also going through a period of reflection and self conflict, almost as if he is looking in a mirror and thinking to himself "Am I really good enough for her?" "Of the crickets that would convince me to call it a night" is probably the speaker's way of saying: "of all the people in the world, only you could convince me to break up with my current partner." This suggests that the speaker has a strong obsession for this woman.
