with a cigarette there on your lips
canadian penny in your pocket
and the songs of the season in the air tonight
like buzzards
the door keeps opening and closing
as you try to place a value on your loved ones
if you decide to ignore them it might make life
so simple
could it be oh could all your dreams just up and disappear?
could it be you won't get what you wanted this year?
with a cigarette there on your lips
you only ever dream of going home
and the songs of the season get under your skin
like a tapeworm
now the wind hits your face with a familiar sting
and it seems like the whole world is preparing to sing
you just keep saying nothing, it keeps you from saying
the wrong thing
could it be oh could all your dreams just up and disappear?
could it be you won't get what you wanted this year?
could it be oh could all your dreams just up and disappear?
could be exactly like you feared
with a cigarette there on your lips
canadian penny in your pocket
and your dreams and your hopes
your family and friends
and the love you had planned to keep till the end
i hope you get them all back for christmas...

General CommentThanks for the lyrics. This is the first song of his that I heard. It was perfect at the time and it is still one of my favourites. I've added 'From the Station" from this album, currently in the queue.

My InterpretationTerrible at song interpretation but I'll give it a go:

Dude hates holiday shopping and has a case of the winter blues, maybe a shit job or one that requires him to be abroad and away from his loved ones.
He feels alienated in his discontent, and bereft of optimism.
That last line, which goes back to the season he hates, has a double-meaning. It suggests he wants to be re-gifted with idealistic hope and a sense of belonging, but really it means "Everything will probably still suck. Statically Yours, Mr. Jaded Cynic".

Or it could just be about how awful consumerism is during the Christmas season...

    Directed by M. Night Shyamayalan.
