"the only night" as written by Martin Terefe and James Morrison....
I was young
And I was a victim
Of her killer smile
Her love was cheap
And it was great for a little while
I had to leave
But she wanted me stay
And she ripped up my shirt
And left the marks of her disdain

I couldn't take it no more
I couldn't spend another night alone
I couldn't take it no more

[Chorus]
If this is where we ended up
Then I refuse to be so hard on myself this time
If everything I have is gone
Then what is wrong
In spending time with you

I'll keep you warm
You'll hold me tight
This might be our only night
I can't give up
No no no no, oh

I tried to reconcile
But it never made a difference
You could cut the atmosphere with a knife
It was so tense and cold
And every time I tried to get little closer to you
You got further and further away from me
Until you faded into the distance
Yes you did
There was nothing I could do

[Chorus]

I'll keep you warm
When you hold me tight
Cause this might be our only night
This might be the only night
I can't spend another night alone
If this is where we ended up
Then I refuse to be so hard on myself this time
If everything I have is gone
Then what is wrong
In spending time with you

[Chorus]

Keep me warm and I hold you tight
Cause this might be our only night

General CommentThis song is so electrifying....It's the first song on the album grabs your attention.I first thought of the song as saying "seize the day(or night)". Refusing to "be so hard on myself this time" means not regreting what I've decided to do,whether it be leaving or staying. That's just my take on it but anyway this song makes me sing at the top of my lungs and dance!

My InterpretationI believe the song is about him remembering being in a relationship that he knew wasn't good for him and even though it was hard to cut her off,he ended it. Then in the second verse,he's remembering how he even had tried to save the relationship at times but it was never getting better. But,as I gather from the chorus,he's continuing to fool around with her because he's as miserable without her as he was with her.So he's saying he's not gonna be hard on himself for still having dealings with her cuz he'll be just as unhappy if he wasn't.Basically,he'd rather be miserable with someone than be miserable alone.
