You rise.
You fall.
You're down, then you rise again.
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.
You rise.
You fall.
You're down, then you rise again.
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.
Rise, fall, down, rise again
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.
Rise, fall, down, rise again
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.

Through black days
Through black nights
Through pitch black insights

Breaking your teeth on the hard life a comin'
Show Your Scars.
Cutting your feet on the hard earth running
Show Your Scars.
Breaking your life, Broken, Beat, & Scarred.
But we die hard.

The dawn,
The death,
The fight to the final breath.
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.
The dawn,
The death,
The fight to the final breath.
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.
Dawn, death, fight, final breath.
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.
Dawn, death, fight, final breath.
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.

They scratch me.
They scrape me.
They cut and rape me.

Breaking your teeth on the hard life a comin'
Show Your Scars.
Cutting your feet on the hard earth running
Show Your Scars.
Breaking your life, Broken, Beat, & Scarred.
But we die hard.

Breaking your teeth on the hard life a comin'
Show Your Scars.
Cutting your feet on the hard earth running
Show Your Scars.
Bleeding your soul in a hard luck story.
Show Your Scars.
Spilling your blood in the hot sun's glory.
Show Your Scars.
Breaking your life, Broken, Beat, & Scarred

We die hard.
We die hard.
We die hard.

General CommentI don't think you need to be a grammar teacher to write songs. James is no naive or uneducated songwriter, he displays quite an extended range of language choices in his songs, I'm sure he wrote that kind of line because it fit the song's melodic structure, that's all. And yeah I think it's about themselves: they're basically saying: yeah, keep hating us and telling us we've sold out and thrown our own legacy and story in the garbage, but we're still standing and strong.

General CommentThat's a paraphrase of a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche. It's basically "That which does not kill me makes me stronger." Then again, Nietzsche ended up going insane (literally).

Song MeaningI'm a little annoyed, but perhaps I'm just misunderstanding something...

Is there some real reason or meaning behind the blatent crappy grammar in the constantly repeated line
"What don't kill ya make ya more strong"?

I realize it's a modification of "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger", but it comes off sounding
idiotic. The message behind the song, great... yes, vague so it can "apply" to everyong, but it's not
the message of the song itself in question. I'm seeing no reason behind the line using such poor grammar.

Obviously I'm missing it, if there is one. It seems to me they either got lazy on the lyrics, or they're
trying to "relate" to their audience, which demonstrates a condescention towards them/us. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I'm not the BIGGEST fan of Metallica, but I am a rather big one... and am feeling a "bleh" towards an album
that is constantly being referred to as their "redemption". The songs are longer, yes... awesome. Finding
my favorite song to be the instrumental because the lyrics are just failing in my opinion. Totally
forgettable, except for this cruddy line that I can't get out of my head because I'm just lost as to why this
got through whatever filters it would've had to go through before getting released....

Hopefully I'm just missing the meaning behind this choice of words...

General CommentI don't know if he did it elsewhere but when Hetfield was introducing this song on the Sheffield gig of World Magnetic he said:

'This song is dedicated to Metallica, its about them*, its about ourselves individually, its about you also, if you have struggled out there, if you have had a tough time in life, at any point, and you made it through, with the help of friends, with the help of family, and maybe the help of music, this song is for you....cos WHAT DON'T KILL YA, MAKE YA MORE STRONG *song starts*'

Immense concert from the best band ever!

    * Them being the Metallica family consisting of the fans and the band themself.

Song MeaningThis song is based around Friedrich Nietzsche's aphorism "What does not kill me, makes me stronger" from his 1888 book "Twilight Of The Idols"

It basicly means never giving up till you die....only death can stop you from reaching ur goals, everything else just makes you stronger and every adversity, hurdle, failure etc just makes you more determined to reach ur goal.
