"Snuff" as written by Sidney George Wilson, Nathan Jonas Jordison, Paul Dedrick Gray, Christopher Michael Fehn, James Donald Root, Craig Alan Jones, Michael Shawn Crahan, Mickael Gordon Thomson and Corey Todd Taylor....
Bury all your secrets in my skin
Come away with innocence, and leave me with my sins
The air around me still feels like a cage
And love is just a camouflage for what resembles rage again

So if you love me, let me go.
And run away before I know.
My heart is just too dark to care.
I can't destroy what isn't there.
Deliver me into my fate, if I'm alone I cannot hate
I don't deserve to have you
My smile was taken long ago, if I can change I hope I never know

I still press your letters to my lips
And cherish them in parts of me that savor every kiss
I couldn't face a life without your light
But all of that was ripped apart, when you refused to fight

So save your breath, I will not care.
I think I made it very clear.
You couldn't hate enough to love.
Is that supposed to be enough?
I only wish you weren't my friend.
Then I could hurt you in the end.
I never claimed to be a saint
My own was banished long ago, it took the death of hope to let you go

So break yourself against my stones
And spit your pity in my soul
You never needed any help
You sold me out to save yourself
And I won't listen to your shame
You ran away, you're all the same
Angels lie to keep control
My love was punished long ago
If you still care, don't ever let me know
If you still care, don't ever let me know

Song MeaningEach part is about love, but each section is different.

Part one is is about how he wants her to stay away. It's fate to be alone, and these things only cause pain for him and those involved. It's too late to save him so don't give him false hope by making him fall in love.

Part two is after they breakup. He still remembers the good times they had, however long ago. She was making things better, but things got to hard and she left him, at least romantically. She was overwhelmed by his problem(s), and tried to support him as a friend. He thinks that her reasoning is bad and refuses to even listen to her. He can't be her friend, but he also can't hate her because they were so close. It's her own fault because he told her he was too messed up, but she didn't listen. She was his last hope for being better, and he had to give all hope to accept that she's gone.

The third part is where he is avoiding her attempts to help. He has a stone will, and she'll break herself trying to get through to him. She can pity him if she wants but it's no difference to him. She gave up on him because she was too weak to stay with him, like he predicted. He doesn't want to hear the reasons why. She left just like everyone else, so the reasons don't really matter. Hope keeps making it seem like there's a chance for him, but it is ultimately manipulation that messes with his head. This always happens to him, and he gives one last warning to stay away. Even if she does really love him, it will only cause more pain. So just stay away, he doesn't want to have hope again just so it can die again.

My InterpretationSimply put, I think it is about a girl who came into the life of someone who was very depressed and brought hope back into his life. The only problem was she didn't care need him the way he needed her. So they broke up, sending him back into depression with the only thing keeping him going over they edge being the idea that she never really cared about him. The idea that he lost someone that truly loved him would destroy him.

I think the title is metaphor for the death of hope. One of the definitions of snuff is the charred portion of a candlewick, or in other words is a burned out candle, the flame of a candle representing hope in this case.

General CommentI also have to agree with all of you.
When I heard the first few seconds of the song, the chords sounded a bit similiar to vermillion part 2. and i thought for a second it could be part 3 ("the goodbye song" quoting kacperator).
This song has to be my fav on the album because it's hard to find a a song wth lyrics/vocals that genuinely parallels the singer/songwriter's own feelings.

"Bury all your secrets in my skin
Come away with innocence, and leave me with my sins"
She was probably the "light" and he was the "dark" in the relationship. as cliche as that sounds.
As easily as she brought innocence and light into his life she quickly left along with it, to leave him with his demons.

"The air around me still feels like a cage"
He still feels trapped in his feelings for her and can't grasp a hold of this new freedom.
"And love is just a camouflage for what resembles rage again…"
If you think about it. Hate isn't the opposite of love. "Indiffeence" is the opposite of BOTH love and hate. Love and hate are actually siblings, they are the same emotion and carry the same passion except for the fact that one is negative the other is a more positive feeling to state the obvious.

"So if you love me, let me go. And run away before I know.
My heart is just too dark to care. I can’t destroy what isn’t there."
I think he wants her to leave before he pulls her down with him too, kauffee.
He loves her too much for her to be tainted and ruined by him and the relationship. He feels that the biggest form or act of love that any person can give is "scarifice". He's willing to sacrifice his own happiness for her to not get hurt.

"Deliver me into my Fate - If I’m alone I cannot hate
    I don’t deserve to have you…
My smile was taken long ago / If I can change I hope I never know"
    It says it all.

"I still press your letters to my lips
And cherish them in parts of me that savor every kiss"
    Says it all...

"I couldn’t face a life without your light
But all of that was ripped apart… when you refused to fight"
You can either "fight or flight". I guess he's asking her to "flight", flee from the relationship. But there's a sense that even though he wants her to leave for the sake of her not getting hurt by him, it kills him to ask her to since it's not what he wants her to do. What he really wants is for her to stay with him and "fight" through the battles and obstacles of the relationship. Make it work no matter how hard it might be.

"So save your breath, I will not hear. I think I made it very clear."

Song MeaningI really love this song 'cause i can relate to it.
imho, this song is about a halfway relationship (that half belongs entirely to the boy as the girl was just using him), but let's analyze the lyrics:

"Bury all your secrets in my skin" --> obvious, every kind of social relationship (like friendship, but NOT love) is kind of easy to maintain at the beginning. i guess the girl told him about "her demons", acting like she wasn't guilty of anything. I'm 100% sure that she trusted him. (or at least, in my experience)

"Come away with innocence and leave me with my sins..." --> after he refused to continue the friends & benefits relationship with her, she probably came after a while back to him because she simply needed to see what's new in his life. As usual, her attitude was of innocence, like nothing happened. On the other side, he is dead inside and doesn't walk to interract as he will never forget what happened.

"The air around me still feels like a cage." --> he's far from getting over her, still trapped in a cage that he has constructed just to isolate himself from the rest of the world. When some1 suffers in love, all he wants is to be alone (at least me).

"And love is just a camouflage for what resembles rage again." --> after all that had happened to him, this is the way he sees love, or the possibility of being with someone agait. It's eventually going to end up bad, with him suffering again, so he doesn't want to be involved ever again.

"So if you love me let me go, and run away before i know" --> he beggs her to leave him alone (there was no positive point in talking to her, what's done is good done. THE END!), before knowing she ever was there.

"My heart is just too dark to care" --> hurt inside, what he's trying to tell the girl is that what she did to him not only broke his heart, but made him completely cold to whatever may happen afterwards...

"I can't destroy what isn't there" --> not completely sure, but i think he's talkin about his conscience, as all the feelings he had for that girl are all gone, but his conscience stops him from trying to fix things.

"Deliever me into my fate, if i'm alone i cannot hate" --> this is like a conclusion. After all that he's been through, he realised it was better if he never knew that girl in the 1st place, so, he wants to be alone, this way excluding the case he'll ever hate another girl in the future.

"I don't deserve to have you" --> her manier of behaving with him in the latest stages made him believe the stupid idea that the girl is too good for him...

"My smile was taken long ago" --> easy to understand

"If i can change a hope i'll never know." --> he is resigned, so, he doesn't want to fuck his head with the question "what if...? what if we could give it another try?" as the current situation is pretty much clear.

"I still press your letters to my lips, and cherish them in parts of me that savor every kiss." --> memories are haunting him...no matter how hard he tries to forget, the memories will always be there, thing that he admits.

"I couldn't face a life without your lights" --> he really loved her. she was everything to him, she probably made him change his living style. when they were together, nothing else mattered, and, at that moment he couldn't possibly imagine life without her.

"But all of that was ripped apart, when YOU refused to fight." --> he knew in the final stages of their halfway relationship that she was just using him. Nothing could ever be so wrong. He asked her to leave as he didn't want to be her fool, and she did so, leaving the impression that it was just the thing she wanted to hear.

"So save your breath, i will not care!" --> when she tries to explain, he's telling her in this polite manier to FUCK OFF. He knows now who she really was, and nothing will ever change his opinion.

"I think i made it very clear." --> simple to understand

"You couldn't hate enough to love, is that supposed to be enough?" --> think about it; hate and love aren's opposed, they're actually siblings. Most often, you hate someone because he/she's doing things that (you think) are hurting him/her. When you hate someone as a person, there are still sentiments involved, and sentiments make us humans. It's indifference that's the opposite of human feelings. Just look at where we are...Indifference is worst than hate...

"I only wish you weren't my friend, then i could hurt you in the end." --> he loved her...i loved her. He could've been the best friend for her, just like brothers and sisters. But, you know, sometimes the friends & benefits stuff sucks for the one that has been refused...it just doesn't make any sense. Still, when some1 wants to be in a relationship with another person without involving pure sentiments, it ends with fight and shout and tears. He had the power not to hurt her, but, after all this time spent alone, he starts to regret it.

"I never claimed to be a saint." --> many girls pretend to be innocent (even if it's hard to believe it...yeah, for them too xD). He tries to tell her, he's not like her...

"Oh, my own was banished long ago." --> he left appart all his friends, all his usual habits...she kind of changed his life, in a good way, or not.

"It took the death of hope to let you go." --> when this ended, everything seemed hopeless and senceless

"So break yourself against my stones" --> when they met again, he realises he's become indifferent to all she's doing or saying...and she realises that's what she's turned him into.

"And SPIT your pity in my soul." --> it's kinda like saying: yeah, go ahead, feel sorry for me (ironically, of course). It's way too late to show me any compassion feelings. It won't mean a thing to me.

"You never needed any help" --> her "innocence" and the conquering of her demons could of been done with his involvement, she just needed to find the strength within herself, without her dragging him down with her. (Copyright "Karm Star" =D)

"You sold me out to save yourself." --> after she pur her heart together (with his help)...she kind of got bored of him and treated him differently...

"And i won't listen to your shame" --> she tries to apologise, but he won't hear it, it's worthless.

"You ran away, you're all the same." --> you left me alone, thrown yourself in the hands of another man. He concludes women are all the same. Probably meaning it's worthless to have another relationship knowing what happened.

"Angles lie to keep control." --> she needed him, but as a puppet, as someone who's available to do all things for you (when, actually, she didn't feel anything for him).

"My love was punished long ago" --> he sincerely loved her, but the way she treated and used him was the most bitter of all punished that could occur.

"If you still care, don't ever let me know." --> there's probably no second chance...

Song MeaningFirst i want to say that this song means a lot to me. It's really deep and since the first time i heard it i couldn't stop doing it over and over again.
For me, it's about wanting to have something that's already slipping through your fingers. It's about something that is over and it hurts to be over. It's a goodbye and final confession. It's about loving so much that you cant separate yourself from the person you love - you are so close, know each other so well. You become almost obsessed with the smell of the loved one, of their presence and you want it badly.
"Bury all your secrets in my skin" - all you dont want to be known you can share it with me. You can forget who you are and what others see you when you're with me - i think that's what it means. It's a plea from someone who wants to be wanted. "Come away with innocence and leave me with my sins"- you are the angel in the case and im the bad, evil, sinner. Even if you are being wrong being with me i am always going to look at you as someone who doesnt make mistakes and is innocent in all of what have happened. Or you are the one who comes and leaves all sins with me even and they stay event after youre gone. All you've shown and said is lingering here. I feel caged when you are here because i have no choice but to be with you. I am dependent on you, you're like a dose i need. A drug. And im angry for needing you, for your numbness. You dont care about anything but i care more than i should for you.
"So if you love me let me go / and run away before i know" i am fading away with you. I know it and im begging for this to be over because i want it too much for my own sake so you have to end it, i never could.
"My heart is just too dark to care, i cant destroy what isn't there" Again with the bad, the darkness that's inside me. I cant destroy what we have because when youre here i act like i dont care as much as i do.
-It's clear that she's driving him insane. Literally. He's so confused and tries to understand what is she doing with him. All she's doing is playing with him.
"So save your breath i will not care/ i think i made it very clear/ you couldnt hate enough to love, is that supposed to be enough?" He is hating her and loving her at the same time. Hate and love are both passionate feelings and the way she is, not caring at all, shows that she doesnt feel even a little bit of what he feels for here. She runs away when it becomes too real or he starts to tell her something about his feelings. "So break yourself against my stones/ and spit your pity in my soul/ you never needed any help, you sold me out to save yourself" He is trying to get away from her and over her, acting like he doesnt care to end things. Separating them with a stone wall, i guess i see it that way. And when she gets that she cant use him, manipulate and play him anymore she "spits her pity in his soul", hurting him. "You ran away, you're all the same/Angels lie to keep control/My love was punished long ago
If you still care, don't ever let me know" For him she's his angel but she controls him and he cant go on like that so he wants her to never let him know if she still "cares".
This is what i think about the song meaning.

General CommentWell, i love this song too, it's beautiful and i really think the song is about a guy who was in a relationship but they broke up (she broke up with him) and he had the worst time forgetting her, letting her go, and then after months or maybe years she's back and she tells him that she loves him but he remembers how hard was it to forget her and he thinks "i won't let her hurt me again like the last time" so he's telling her "so if you love me let me go, or run away before i know" because he knows he will fall for her again but he does not want that, he's suffered enough

That's what i think! I may be wrong but the beautiful thing about songs is that we can make our own interpretation :)
