"Surrender Your Sons" as written by Cory Brandan Putman, M. Chino and R. Cove....
Your pale skin is a razor sharp wire so I place these scales over my eyes
Don't touch me.
I'm sick.
You whisper.
But I hear only what I choose.

Hello my good old friend.
Your hand pulls me back from that
Mire or will I love back and stare and wonder is she is way back there afterwards
My mouth will be filled with gravel and I'm left alone

You know that feeling of fear and desperation in the pit
Of your stomach making you nauseous
Excitement apprehension you wish you could lose it all

Hello my good old friend.
Your hand pulls me back from that Mire
Or will I love back and stare and wonder is she is way back there

Hello my good old friend.
Your hand pulls me back from that Mire
Or will I love back and stare and wonder is she is way back there afterwards
My mouth will be filled with gravel and afterwards, I'm left alone

When your head spins and your stomach swells
The fear of dealing with this is stronger than the fear of just
Forgetting this and future I am scared of you
I swear I'll find my way back to the light now that I'm left alone

Hello my good old friend.
Your hand pulls me back from that Mire
Or will I love back and stare and wonder is she is way back there [Repeats]
My mouth will be filled with gravel and afterwards I'm left alone

General CommentI think this is about being too anxious or scared to acomplish what you want.

that looks horrible reading back...but i think its also about wanting to forget about reaching your goal, but you cant.

General Commentehh, i'd say its about leaving a harmful relationship behind

the 'good old friend' has saved him from that relationship, but he's scared that he will "look back" and get his mouth "filled with gravel" again by that girl. Also, he wishes he could lose the "excitement apprehension" he feels for this woman, probably the Anti-Mother with the whole cd refers to

General Commentits pretty obvious that this is about his good friend named jesus/God. like when he ends the song with i swear ill find my way back to the light.. it makes it rather obvious and of course the friend that pulls him back....

My Interpretation I'm not dead on, but this is how I look at it. :)

Your pale skin is a razor sharp wire so i place these scales over my eyes.

(The one he's speaking of lacks exposure of to something. In this case God, and his word. So the scales over my eyes represent him looking past these flaws, or preferences in a girl.)

Don't touch me, I'm sick. You whisper, but i hear only what i choose.

(the desire to part away from God and his love for you, a desire to drift into worldly desires, it's wrong, the Holy Spirit tells him its wrong, don't do it. but he won't listen.)

Hello my good old friend, your hand pulls me back from that mire or will i look back and stare and wonder if she is way back there

(God is the good old friend, helping him the mire is liek mud, he's stuck and he is'nt going anywhere, but sinking. not sure if it's really "or i will look back" or "and i will look back" but either way, he will look back to that female that drug him into worldly affairs and desires and she will still be where she was in a spiritual sense, while he will be making progress forward.

afterwards my mouth will be filled with gravel and i'm left alone.

(In Proverbs 20:17 it says, "Food gained by fraud tastes sweet to a man, but he ends up with a mouth full of gravel" which leads me to believe he obtained something unfairly. But now he's alone and he sees the consequences of his actions.)

You know that feeling of fear and desperation in the pit of your stomach making you nauseous.
Excitement apprehension you wish you could lose it all.
When your head spins and your stomach swells.
The fear of dealing with this is stronger that the fear of just forgetting this and future i am scared of you.

(nervousness of the future obviously, what it has stored for him. And the guilt of his past actions taking a toll on his conscience.)

I swear I'll find my way back to the light now that I'm left alone.
(The person in his life no longer has an influence on him. Now that he's alone, he can sort things out.)

While i hate attributing a song to a relationship it clearly seems to me it's reflective of the persuasive nature of females over males. Many great men in history had weaknesses through a women close to them. "Be hind every great man there is a great women" I believe in that as vise versa. (Look at Adam and Eve)

Quoting Proverbs further confirmed it, because of Solomon (who wrote proverbs) had a weakness for women when they would drag him further away from God, to follow their idles.

P.s. Women are not evil, just most of them. :P

My Interpretationi can understand how this song might be about coming out of a relationship that dragged the narrator down. in my own opinion, i think it could also just be about someone who was lost and found their way out again. i agree with andycarnage that god is the "good old friend" that dragged him out of the mire of earthly things. i think the girl the narrator looks back to could be someone he loved and pulled him down into the mire; or she might just be someone he knew and cared about (not necessarily romantically) who is still stuck. at any rate, everyone's comments are interesting and made me think about the song a lot more.

My InterpretationWhat if the good old friend is the girl herself? Like she helped him in difficult times by being with him, they were in love, but now that its over, he looks back and sees shes so far away and doing fine, while he's crippled. People try to help him but he'd only listen to what he chooses to. He wants her back and tries to work things out but ends up even worse (mouth filled with gravel) he's left alone.

"I swear ill find my way back" - this line can refer to both still having hopes of getting her back and/or letting it go and getting back to normal life with clear mind.

I love how many interpretations of their songs one can come up with.
