The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. I love this song. I rediscovered it a little while ago & it takes over my memories and thoughts each time it comes on. Interpretation: Personally, I think this song is about the writer (or singer) talking to God. I think she's asking Him to reverse some things, her love for Him because she has gone astray. Most listeners would think that it's about a relationship (bf/gf) and the singer is pleading with him that they could go back to the way things were. A time when they loved each other and things were easy.
