"Something Is Not Right with Me" as written by and Jonathan Russell Matthew Aveiro....
[Chorus]
Something is not right with me! [Repeat: x3]
How was I supposed to know?
Something is not right with me! [Repeat: x3]
Trying not to let it show!

I tried to call you collect
You said you would not accept
Your friends are laughing cause
No body uses pay phones

Gave me quarters to select
So I'm on the jukebox again
People dancing
Should of never chose "Girlfriend"

[Chorus]

[Repeat: x3]
Crash into the people who're
Sleeping late into the evening
Reach behind they can hardly find their spines

You said you do like because
I try to be the best of
It was smokey but it died in your front yard

You find out who's dating who
But when it comes to you
Hope is pulling punches
With different ways in my mind

General CommentTo patbenatar: Something is not right with you. ;)

You guys always think a song is either about being gay or about drugs. There's more to life, ya know? I think y'all have been brainwashed by Mom, Dad and the Mass Media.
That said, this song isn't particularly deep or anything. Still a good song, tho.

'Girlfriend' is one of the greatest power pop songs of all time. It's the title track of the f'n brilliant 1991 Matthew Sweet album. The real beauty/passion of the song is in the guitars so, if you wanna relate, you should hear it -- not just read the lyrics.
    -------
    I want to love somebody
I hear you need somebody to love
    I want to love somebody
I hear you're looking for someone to love

    'Cause you need to
Be back in the arms of a good friend
    And I need to
Be back in the arms of a girlfriend

    I didn't know nobody
And then I saw you coming my way
    I didn't know nobody
And then I saw you coming my way

    Don't you need to
Be back in the arms of a good friend
    Oh 'cause honey believe me
I'd sure love to call you my girlfriend

    ****snip****

And I'm never gonna set you free
No, I'm never gonna set you free

General Commentit's like jacobstorm said, the song is about someone who doesn't fit in with the cool kids & hipsters. I think it's a pretty straightforward meaning really. About the superficiality and fickleness of the social scene, people concerned with knowing who's dating whom and following every new fad, everyone afraid to stand out from the crowd (spineless) or have any quirks. This guy is trying to keep up and be accepted by this crowd (maybe a girl in particular) but Doing It Wrong. He chooses a cheesy song on the jukebox, buys a car he thinks will be impressive and retro but just splutters and dies, uses an embarrassingly old skool method of communication (payphone). All his attempts get him ridiculed. I think he recognises the futility of it all & is glad he's not affected by shallow concerns even if that makes him uncool.

I like how this little song is so uptempo and humorous, it makes me smile. I've always seen CWK as a very down-to-earth band too, quite old fashioned in a way, so maybe it could be applied to them generally favouring substance over style and not trying to be something they're not.

General CommentDidn't like this song when I first heard it, but's it's really grown on me.

What's with the beginning though? It sounds like some French techno stuff going on.
