"Give a Little Love" as written by and Charles Fink....
Oh well the world never seemed bigger
Than the summer of '98
Living out in the suburbs
Planning my escape
I grew my hair to my shoulders
Formed a band with a couple of friends
And we called ourselves The Devils Playhouse
Influences like Bruce and the band

And we'd sing and play
Simple three chord rock and roll
And miles away
The other kids would just grow old
But we're making our own way out
Yeah we're making our own way out

Well we'd practice every week in my bedroom
While my parents were working in town
And one morning in our school assembly
Played a cover of "Don't Let Me Down"
The performance was nervous and awkward
But the passion was real and profound
And the kids in the audience laughing
While the band just looked at the ground

But the victory
For the kids who believe in rock and roll
I know for me
That performance lives, it never grows old
But we're making our own way out
Yeah we're making our own way out

Well I'd give it all back just to do it again
Yeah I'd turn back time, be with my friends
Yeah I'd give it all back just to do it again
Turn back time, be with my friends
Yeah I'd give it all back just to do it again
Turn back time and be with my friends
Yeah I'd give it all back just to do it again
Turn back time, be with my friends
Tonight

My InterpretationThey're definitely trying to convey the message that you can't be loved without loving first. It sounds like he is trying to tell an ex-love that he can't love her because she doesn't love him. Hence "If you give a little love, you can get a little love of your own."

General CommentWhat a beautiful, beautiful song. Definitely my favourite on the album.

It's just so simple and so honest. Especially the end, so beautiful.

General CommentAbsolutely awesome song. I think it's about how love is bigger than life. The things you do and the love you give lives on long after you do. To me, it's almost like the song is sung from someone who has passed on to someone they used to love, saying their love still surrounds them and telling them to keep sharing their love just as they once did. Either way, GREAT song!

General Commenti like to think that this song is kind of a message to an ex-love, that even though they've been through a lot, and the narrator gave all the love in his heart, things just didn't work out, and he just doesn't want to see her break another guy's heart.

General CommentAgain I think this is a message to Laura Marling, his then girlfriend, but he is writing it in third person as if its a message from someone else. The fact that he saying his love surrounds her like an ether in everything that she does was possibly one of the reasons she split with him, things were maybe getting too serious =(

General CommentOpps, sorry didnt mean to comment directly to you.

Mmm, I think you are all wrong. Well, in a sense. The song is DEFINITELY a double entendre, meaning it has two meanings. If you look at the song from a philosophical perspective the band is trying to convey the very CORE of the Christian faith. Love was Jesus' teaching. And he wanted us to love one another. "Love your neighbor as yourself." In the lines "If you give a little love you can get a little love of your own. Don't break HIS heart," is where you can really see this. Jesus said "whatever you do for the least of my people you do unto me," Meaning if we do not show the love he taught us of to one another we'll be breaking His heart. So "Him" is a double entendre for God, and _____ (insert any human being). It's true, life by itself really is not all that it's worth, BUT I LOVE YOU. And that's what gave the world value. Love did. And I dont know if you know this, but God = Love by the Christian definition. Love and community (because of the trinity). God put us here to reflect His own self "we were made in God's image and likeness." And what we do out of love on earth is what stays on earth. "Heaven is here and now." When we show love we experience bits and pieces of heaven, and heaven is everlasting.
