Are you thirsty
Standing in the rain?
Not sure where you are
Or how you lost your way?
Are you drowning
In some bar outside of town?
Searching for something given not found?
A crowd of people
But totally alone?
At the front door
But worlds away from home?

Light up the nights last regret and
Burn your only safety net
Step to the edge
It's such a long way down

I left the ninety-nine to find the one
And you're the one
I walked a thousand miles
In this desert sun
Only to bring you back
Only to bring you back

Are you tired
Of chasing the wind under water?
Do you aspire to breath again?
Are you dying?
Is that the best that you can do?
Cause you can't find your place
In a world that wasn't meant for you?

Hello it's Me
I couldn't sleep
I was just counting sheep
And I'm missing you,
Hello it's Me
I couldn't sleep
I was just counting sheep.

General CommentBasically, this is about a person who is emotionally lost. For instance, he/she is depressed, is searching for something, feels alone, is tired emotionally. They search for comfort in things like drugs and alcohol and do it out of regret. "Step to the edge. It's a long way down" means that he/she is giving up and therefore is "stepping to the edge" like committing suicide. The chorus is talking about the speaker basically trying to sacrifice to help and encourage him/her to be the way he/she used to be. Finally, I think the "Hello, it's me, I couldn't sleep. I was just counting sheep. I'm missing you." is where the speaker is telling him/her that he misses the way they used to be and he can't sleep because he's worried about him/her.

General CommentNot really the meaning, just some symbolism I picked out

Being a Christian song, I was reminded of the smilie that God is like the shepard and we as the sheep.
"I left the ninety-nine to find the one
And you're the one" When one sheep goes missing from the flock, shepards will leave the rest of his sheep to seek out the one who went astray.
    "I walked a thousand miles
In this desert sun" I was reminded of Ireal's heat, the rocky terrian, the ragged cliffs and valleys where shepards tend to their flocks
"I was just counting sheep" brings the metaphor to a lovely close. =]

    My InterpretationLuke 15:3-7 NLT
"So Jesus told this story: If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won't he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders. When he arrives, he will call together his friends and neighbors saying, 'Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.' In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven't strayed away."
