"Obsessions" as written by and Marina Diamandis....
Sunday, wake up, give me a cigarette
Last night's love affair is looking vulnerable in my bed
Silk sheet, blue dawn, Colgate, tongue warm
Won't you quit your crying? I can't sleep
One minute I'm a little sweetheart
And next minute you are an absolute creep

We've got obsessions
I want to wipe out all the sad ideas
That come to me when I am holding you
We've got obsessions
All you ever think about are sick ideas
Involving me, involving you

Supermarket, oh what packet of crackers to pick?
They're all the same, one brand, one name, but really they're not
Look, look, just choose something quick
People are staring, time ticker-quicking
Cheeks are on fire; just choose something, something, something
Pressure overwhelming
Next minute I am turning out of the door, facing one week without food
A day, a day when things are pretty bad
Don't let it make you feel sad,
The crackers were probably bad luck anyway
Can't let your cold heart be free
When you act like you've got an OCD

We've got obsessions
I want to erase every nasty thought
That bugs me every day of every week
We've got obsessions
You never tell me what it is that mades you strong
And what it is that mades you weak

We've got obsessions
I want to erase every nasty thought
That bugs me every day of every week
We've got obsessions
You never told me what it was that made you strong
And what it was that made you weak
Mades you weak, mades you weak
made you weak, made you weak, made you weak
Made you

Sunday, wake up, give me a cigarette
Last night's love affair is looking vulnerable again

General CommentActually, I think the obsession is obsessive compulsive disorder. As a sufferer myself, when she says "the crackers were probably bad luck anyway" it's the archetypal thought process an OCD sufferer would go through - something as benign as a brand of crackers is believed to have an enormous impact on the day. It's kind of like superstition but in extreme form; everyday objects are believed to be "lucky" or "unlucky". And wanting to erase nasty thoughts is another particularly pertinent line suggesting this song is written about OCD - repetitive rituals are often carried out in order to erase a negative thought.

I adore Marina. Her album and all her LPs have been incredible; she's truly refreshing, honest and emotive.

Song MeaningIn an interview (newsoftheworld.co.uk/entertainment/music/720513/…), Marina stated that this was written as a love song about an ex-boyfriend:

"Speaking of Obsessions, that's the title of the only love song on her album - written about breaking up with a boyfriend. "He's one of my best mates now - and he loves the song," she smiles.

"He's less keen on the lyrics. He hates how he comes across. But I've told him that's the skill of a writer, to make a fantasy sound real. He knows that half the song is true, and half of it's lies.

"Over time, singing the song has become less about him and more about, well, obsessions. My biggest one is getting enough sleep. If I get less than eight hours, I'm anxious all day."

My InterpretationI got the impression it could be about someone dealing with social anxiety, along with OCD.

"Look, look, just choose something quick
People are staring, time to go quick
Skin is on fire; just choose something, something, something
    Pressure overwhelming
Next minute I am turning out of the door, facing one week without food"

She can't decide on something as simple as which crackers to pick because of OCD. And she feels like everyone is staring because of her cracker dilemma, so she feels embarrassed and overwhelmed. But at the same time she can't pick crackers because she's overwhelmed by the thought of people staring. She'd rather leave and go without food than deal with the embarrassment of being seen and judged by others.
It's something I used to deal with until I overcame it, so that's just how I interpret it.

Song MeaningIn an interview, Marina was asked "What's the whole cracker concept in 'Obsessions'?" Her response was:

"That's just real life. When I was going mental one day, I would go shopping, because I have nothing better to do. And I feel like I would reach for pasta or crackers, and I feel like there's something wrong with the first packet, so then I touch the second one, and there'd be something wrong with that, so I'd go to the third, and then forth. Then I put the forth one right back; and then I'd have to put it back, because I thought the third was the one. So it's basically just a mental illness."

    General CommentThis song is africkingmazing.
She's like Dresden Dolls meets Regina Spektor meets Metric.

Who, by the way, are threee of my favourite artists.

I seriously hope Marina makes it. At least as far as like, the Dresden Dolls :] .

General CommentI think the first part is about a woman trapped in an abusive relationship, where the two partners are obsessed with each other, but it is completely unhealthy.

Then the second part, might be about an anorexic or bulimic person who worries constantly about food and being caught eating. The dieting is an obsession.

Lyric CorrectionLet me help you with:

People are staring, time to come quick in (?)
Cheeks are on fire; just choose something, something, something

    It's actually:

People are staring, time to go quick in
Skin is on fire; just choose something, something, something
