There's a spider in the drain and he's feeling pain
and he doesn't want to die any more than you or I
He's struggling to live, but he doesn't have much time
Any more than you or I
You or I
We've got to die, we've got to live
We've got to take what we can get
We sell ourselves for petty change
And when we die we rearrange
It's time to take it back again
It's time to take it back again
I want you to love me like I love you

There's nothing more for me to say
I spoke my piece, I go on my way
And fare thee well, where you go
You might need help, but I won't know
'Cause I'm up here in my own cell
It could be heaven, it could be hell
We'll never know just who we are
'Cause when we die we become a star
And stars can't talk
Because they have no mouth to speak about their past
They simply shine up in the sky
And give their light to you and I

And where would we be without their light
We call out names and then start a fight
But then again that's what we do
I hate me and hate you too
'Cause I'm in pain, just like the spider in the drain
I am a fighter, but I can't win, I've got to lose
Give me strength to see me through
And ease the pain that I must feel
As my bones break and I taste the steel
As i go down the drain

I'm insane

General CommentI imagine the whole song being written by someone in a mental institution. All the fear and desperation in the lyrics, and then the last line also makes sense.

General Commenti like how this song talks about all the good & bad of living & dying and then wraps up from where it started by talking about the spider again. sorry that that's such an ugly sentence.
[someone said that pig was a vegan song. i agree & this one is, too.]

General CommentI agree it is probably about someone in an insane asylum but some how i can't but feel it has something to do with the inevitable fact that even the fighters and the strong have to lose to. I think the last part is my favorite talking about easing the pain I'm gonna have to feel.

One of my favorite songs. Beauty in sound.

General CommentI think the song is actually about a prisoner who is about to be executed as stated by the line "As my bones break and I taste the steel" near the end. The person is afraid of being executed and continually states on how much he or anyone wants to stay alive.

My InterpretationI'm pretty sure this is about all living things being the same, the meaning of life, the afterlife, reincarnation, and the fact that no matter how we live, we have to "lose" at the end by dying. I know what the love part is about, but I'm not going to discuss that here. His life is his cell, as it is everyone's. At the end, when there is that fighting part, it's about how people that live on Earth and don't see the light of the stars (without their light) and "get it", those ignorant people that don't know of the connectedness of it all fight and act like animals which goes back to the fact that we're no better or worse than the spider. That's what I think it's about. Expand your minds.

General CommentI'm pretty sure it's a poem from either someone deeply unhappy, or dead and looking down from wherever at the state of the world and the negativity in it. They aren't thinking rationally (or are, whichever way you look at it) but it's their ultimate thoughts on life.

He relates to how he is feeling to being a spider down a drain. It doesn't want to die, and is struggling to live and in pain, and he says to being in pain like the spider. There's changes from I want you to love me like i love you to I hate me and I hate me and I hate you to - almost wanting to be something but ultimately hating it, and this shows his distorted thinking. He's not happy, and is confused at the state of the world. We fight anyway, even though stars shine.

It ends on "as I go down the drain" - this means he has lost, and something, whether that's death, or depression, or insanity, has happened to him. Earlier in the song he mentions he won't know what's happening with the listener, and that's because he's too distracted by his own thoughts which ultimately lead to him "going down the drain"

Either way it's deep, it certainly covers the hate in this world and why he doesn't understand it when we are all just people - or spiders - in the same boat, struggling to live. Unfortunately it doesn't end up well for him thinking this way.
