When the streetlights come on and the fireflies flicker,
I am walking her home making plans.
With her shoes in her hands, I am watching her dance,
As the hem of her dress gently kisses the grass.

It suddenly rains on us,
She is laughing and turns up her hands.

Like autumn turns leaves, winter will breathe, cold on her necks, snow in our paths.
Wherever she goes, all that I know about us is that beautiful things never last,
That's why fireflies flash.

When this summertime ends, we will not part as friends,
Things were promised in blood; we have sinned.
Now there's tears in her eyes as she's screaming goodbyes,
I run 'long side the car turning numb to the sound.

I notice a chill in the air,
September is creeping up fast.

Like autumn turns leaves, winter will breathe, cold on her necks, snow in our paths.
Wherever she goes, all that I know about us is that beautiful things never last,
That's why fireflies flash.

Innocence didn't mean we're immune to these things,
Let's blame the passage of time.
Love and loss, truth it costs more than I can spare right now.
Maybe it's simpler to lie...

Like autumn turns leaves, winter will breathe, cold on her necks, snow in our paths.
Wherever she goes, all that I know about us is that beautiful things never last,
That's why fireflies flash

General Commenti think this is about young summer love.

obviously the first verse shows how "perfect" and happy their relationship is. although he focuses on her and her happiness, it shows how ideal and beautiful their time together is. however i think he focuses on her to more effectively show how things changed and the consequences of his feelings for her [both good and bad].

he then has a more serious second verse in which obviously they say goodbye. I think that maybe distance has a factor, but i think that he lost feelings for her, and when summertime ends and they have to say goodbye, they can't leave as friends because she's so in love with him and he's not. Also, the second line "Things were promised in blood; we have sinned." implies that maybe she lost her virginity to him [hence the blood and saying that they have sinned because of pre-marital sex]. This also adds to why they wouldn't be able to leave as friends. obviously the last 2 lines show how upset she is about the parting but how he seems to be a bit apathetic about the whole situations... turning numb to the sound.

the next verse, when he says "innocence doesn't mean we're immune to these things" i think he is saying because they were naively "in love", doesn't mean that it disregards reality. he just kind of engaged in this relationship because it was fun at the time, and even though he had innocent and pure intention, it doesn't mean that he can't still hurt her. saying that truth costs more than he can spare right now, and that its simpler for him to lie, shows that he knows that telling her the truth will be way to painful for her and that maybe lying will be easier. which is why i think he says he'll blame the passage of time, which also implies the long distance summer fling- their relationship ended because the time had passed and it was time for him to leave, at least that's what he wants her to believe

finally i think that the chorus describes how his feelings change over time and how reality begins to set in. like autumn leaves change colors, his feelings for her changed, and then chilly winter comes "breathing" the cold harsh reality that he doesn't love her anymore. and the "snow" that kind of separates their paths [if you think of a heavy snowstorm, you get snowed in and can't get to certain places]. however he says that wherever she goes and all that he knows about their relationship [aka what he learned from this whole experience] is that beautiful things don't last, you can experience them for a second but sooner or later some form of reality sets in and changes it.

overall its a GORGEOUS song and i think ron pope is a GENIUS! his music is so soulful and meaningful. plus his voice is sooooo beautiful! you can really hear the emotion behind it

General Commentit kind of sounds like "cold on our necks" and it actually makes sence unless its about someone who has 2 necks

General CommentI think this song is about a relationship that seemed perfect at the beginning but faded away or things changed as so he is saying that nothing good lasts forever. It has a sad feel to it but the lyrics and music are so beautiful I can't help close my eyes and enjoy it. Relates to so many people, love ron pope!

My InterpretationThe first stanza is a flashback on their good times. He's watching her be happy, smiling, dancing, letting loose, and he is completely in love.

The chorus is showing the change through time. As autumn turns into winter we have to realize not everything lasts forever, or as Ron Pope puts it, beautiful things never last. It's there and as fast as a firefly's light goes out, things you spent so much time (like he did in the first stanza) admiring for its beauty can be gone.

Like in most relationships, you make promises about things lasting forever being there through the test of time, and this one was no different. But it hasn't happened that way. Promises are broken. It hasn't ended on good terms and she's still very visually and verbally upset about it. I think he is too. He's following her car so it's not that he's given up. But perhaps he's realized there's just no other way. It's hopeless. And as the car leaves his sight it's making more sense to him. This hasn't worked out because nothing does. It's like all other things, and the chorus again reminds us nothing lasts forever.

The next bit is his saying that they had the best intentions. They did things hoping for the best, and they did it for love. It's not either of their faults it didn't work, it's not anyone's fault, so he'll just call it what was destined to happen (the passage of time). Or that's what he's going to tell himself to make him feel better (maybe it's simpler to lie.)

--It's definitely cold on our* necks--

I absolutely love this song. It's so morose but perfect in every way.

General CommentI don't know, but when I listen it kind of sounds like the end of high school sweethearts, "Sepetmeber is sreeping up fast" and taking about "when summertime ends", like the realization that the long distance will or already has ruined this relationship with her, it's the letting go of like a first love

General CommentTo me, the song is about how the most beautiful things die or fade away. (obviously in his perspective) In the beginning hes showing how perfect their relationship is then it all ends, he drives away while the girl is screaming "goodbye" and he just ignores her and keeps driving away. I love this song :)

My Interpretationto me it kind of sounds like maybe they were like "summer loves" and as the summer turns back to autumn/winter their relationship turned sour?
and about the driving away part, maybe he's on holiday or has to go back to college/university or something. i don't know.

this is such a beautiful song, i adore it.

My InterpretationThis song is so sweet and beautifully sung.
I agree that it is about a summer love, and him realising that it has to end, and it reminds me of the notebook which is my favourite movie (:
I love every line, and don't think it could be better.
Ron Pope has an amazing voice, with alot of emotion.

General Commentalso, i think the line "it suddenly rains on us... she's laughing and throws up her hands" may be describing how he suddenly starts realizing he doesn't love her [the sudden rain] and that she's naive and oblivious to that fact, which is why she laughs and throws up her hands in the rain.

"I notice a chill in the air,
    September is creeping up fast."
^i think that the chill represents his changed feelings and the fact that he has to end things. September creeping up fast is essentially saying that the time to break the bad news to her is coming up fast and that he has to tell her soon.
