This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
It's tragic; you tried to cut yourself in half,
But this isn't magic; in fact it's something much more dark, or more dramatic
Self harm, that's what they call it.
'Cause it just affects you.
It's your life, your body, so you can choose what you do,
And if one day you can't rein it in,
And of your last breath you are the only witness,
Then so be it, cause it's your last breath,
And it's nobody else's business.
But, how about your little sister?
I mean, you think your life's been bad,
And by no means am I belittling that,
'Cause I know the troubles you've had
But a teen finding out her big sister chose death over life,
Finding out instead of turning to her with your problems, You turned to a knife
That's a whole lot of pain to deal with,
And a whole lot of damage
And the only role model she has is little more than words
engraved in granite.
But as you said before, this just affects you.
It's your life, your body, so you can choose what you do.
And if one day you can't rein it in,
And of your last breath you are the only witness,
Then so be it, cause it's your last breath,
And it's nobody else's business.
But then, how about your parents?
God knows they've done all they can to support.
Yeah, you didn't go up in a mansion,
But they gave you the best life they could afford,
And the second that last bit of life tickles out,
and your lungs cease to breath,
They've fail the most important task that they will ever receive.
They failed to give their child a life that's worth living,
And that's a failure as long as they live, of themselves, is unforgiving.
But as you said before, this just affects you.
It's your life, your body, so you can choose what you do.
And if one day you can't rein it in,
And of your last breath you are the only witness,
Then so be it, 'cause it's your last breath,
And it's nobody else's business.
But, how about your friends?
How did they fail to see this coming?
I mean, you can only hold so much pain,
And recently it seems like the tap's been left running.
Families grow distant, but it's meant to be your friends you can rely on.
They shouldn't be there for just fun and drinks.
They should be the shoulder to cry on.
They should be the ones you turn to,
When you can't talk to your family.
But they failed to because although you didn't ask for their support,
It should have been mandatory.
But as you said before, this just affects you.
It's your life, your body, so you can choose what you do.
And if one day you can't rein it in,
And of your last breath you are the only witness,
Then so be it, 'cause it's your last breath,
And it's nobody else's business.
But then, what about me?
What kind of boyfriend am I?
Instead of living a life I was a big part of,
You would rather die.
Instead of fighting though together,
And turning things around,
You decided the grass is greener
On the other side of the ground.
Of our shared lives there was nothing worth living
for as far as you could see.
So if that's the case for you
Then what is there left in this life for me?
But as you said before, this just affects you.
It's your life, your body, your sister,
your parents, your friends, and your partner
So you can choose what you do.
And if one day you can't rein it in,
And of your last breath you are the only witness,
Then fuck everybody else cause that ain't something you've got to live with
The magician's assistant
Too many problems to list them,
Not enough people to listen.
The magician's assistant....
The magician's assistant......

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
I like how everyone is saying it's an ugly message. About how it's better if someone takes their life because they may be happier this way.
You're retarded in my opinion. Suicide is not, I repeat, NOT, a happy prospect. Take it from someone who has actually had suicidal thoughts. Fucking morons.
As for the message, it's not saying how "suicide's selfish", at least not to me. It's talking more about how it's not just about you and yourself. That it actually effects everyone around you, and how these people would feel when you take your own life.
I agree with Joey, this song and it's messages are extemely helpful to people suffering from depression thinking of ending it all, it shows you still have something to live for and people you love, that love you back, and makes you think how could you do this to the people you love without even trying to work through your issues with them first, but "if one day you can't rein it in,<br /> and of your last breath you are the only witness,<br /> Then so be it, cause it's your last breath,<br /> and it's nobody else's business.<br /> Then fuck everything else cause that's not something you've got to live with"
Wow, what a blistering song about suicide and the effects it has on those around the 'victim'.
The lyrics in this are so powerful. I've seen him play this live and the whole hall was silent and felt cold. It really does hit you hard
Yeah no one had this song up, and I really thought it deserved it so I wrote down the lyrics.
"Then fuck everything else cause that is something you’ve got to live with"
should be
"Then fuck everything else cause that is /not/ something you’ve got to live with"
This made me shiver
This is how selfish suicide is. Note the excessive use of 'you' and 'your' etc. I like how he then purposely emphasises and expresses every case in a way that parodys the idea.
i dont think its as easy as calling 'suicide selfish'<br /> i think when someone decides to take their own life, they've hit the brick wall and they seriously just cant see anything worth living for. i wouldnt know because ive never even had those thoughts. <br /> <br /> it's horrible for the family, friends, boyfriends, girlfriends etc to deal with but we dont know what the person is feeling or thinking. <br /> i love this song because it does really put things into perspective.<br /> <br /> feelingthis26 has got it spot on, you cant expect a sucicidal person to just keep living because they'll make other people sad. its one of those things only YOU will feel if it came to it.<br /> <br /> i dont want to start an argument about this either. suicide is terrible but it wont ever stop because a lyrical genuis wrote this song.<br /> dont get me wrong, i love this song! but im not really agreeing with your views.
This song came on shuffle when I was sitting on a plane today with the ipod turned up full to block out engine noise, and it was so good I almost started convulsing I was trembling so hard. Excellent way with words.
Suicide is not selfish. I like this song, but I absolutely hate the message. YOU'RE the one being selfish by saying, "Oh no, don't kill yourself because I will be sad!" What if they were happier dead? Would you want them to live their life being completely miserable just so YOU can be happy they aren't dead? Sometimes nothing can help people, put yourself in your position before you say they are being selfish.
Not trying to start anything here, but I wanted to write my opinion.
I actually agree with you. The song is really powerful but I think the whole aspect of "fine, be selfish and kill yourself" is a disgusting message to send out. And I don't think anyone should be made to live an unhappy life just because they don't want to disappoint those around them.
Personally I think any song that makes people realise or even think about their actions on others can only have a positive effect. I think he is saying that ultimately it is your choice as whether or not to take your life, but realise that it is the last thing that anybody around you would hope to happen and would do anything to avoid. Let somebody know that there is a problem and don't suffer alone.<br /> <br /> rxchy, you think that the message of the song is disgusting? The whole point of it isn't that anyone should be "made to live an unhappy life just because they don't want to disappoint those around them" but try to get some help. Again, just my opinions but I know that at your darkest hour, there is always somebody to talk to, to confide in. <br /> <br /> Sorry if I've ranted.
It's selfish to hurt everyone that loves you for your own "benefit". Friends and family of suicide victims dont want the person to stick around sad, we wanted to help them, but they didnt give us the chance. Id bet youve never lost anyone you loved to suicide.
The message of the song is that suicide is not merely "self harm" because it affects everyone close to you. He's not saying he has no empathy towards his partner - shown by the line "And by no means am I belittling that, <br /> cause I know the troubles you've had" - what he is saying is that you need to open up about any problems your storing inside. The last lines "too many problems to list them, not enough people to listen" is ironic in a sense. It's supposed to be how his partner feels and yet the whole song has been about those people who are there and who are willing to help this person
I don't think he is saying that. I truly believe that this song is trying to say that even though you fee as if there is "not enough people to listen" there are "your sister, your parents, your friends, and your partner" who would drop everything if you told them that you were contemplating suicide. I've been dating a girl for almost two years now. She was suicidal and a cutter when we first started dating but she hasn't cut in over six months. At first I didn't know and she literally had to tell me that she was contemplating death before I saw anything... I took her to a doctor and she was diagnosed and we couldn't be happier... I think all this song is saying is reach out and others will catch you.
