The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I can watch little girl from the back of my car
I see you and show at the place that you are
Groceries spillin' up out of your bag
Thinkin' you'll end up a penniless hag
But I see the girl that you are deep inside
Won't you allow me to give you a ride
I can console you and give you kiss
Show you that you can do better than this
Angel girl
In a cold dark world
I'm gonna be your man
Angel girl
In a cold dark world
I'll make you understand
I know that you're thinkin' I'm trying to score
But deep in your heart you know that I'm more
Than a cat or a scoundrel
Now that I've found you, I don't want to lose you
How can I prove, you know that I am sincere
You don't need to fear
I'm not like the others; I'll be like a brother
I will protect you, never disrespect you
But if you love then I'll be here to sex you
Angel girl
In a cold dark world
I'm gonna be your man (I'm gonna be there)
Angel girl
In a cold dark world
I'll make you understand
It might take awhile to get with the style
Life at the end of the miracle mile
But you're gonna love the rising above
All the trash that is sweeping you under the rug
I'm gonna be there
Angel girl
In a cold dark world
I'm gonna be your man (I'm gonna be there)
Angel girl
In a cold dark world

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
creepy/pathetic? i thought it was cute...he just wants to take care of her..
i like this song
groceries is the word where the question marks are I believe.
So far, even though i've only listened to first 3ish songs, this is my favorite so far.
The only decent part of this song (in my opinion) is the chorus.
This is my favorite song on the cd. I think it's lyrics are pretty self-explanitory.
I like the differing tones between the chorus and the verses are very cool. It's so much darker musically during the verses, but during the chorus it's very up lifting and hopeful.
the person that's singing the song is kind of creepy/pathetic sounding
"I will protect you, never disrespect you But if you love then I'll be here to sex you"
Completely out of place, but that's what we love about Rivers, he's being all sweet and nice and then comes with a "I wonder how you touch yourself" that makes you open your eyes in utter astonishment.
I know! I had to look up the lyrics to this song just to make sure I heard it right at first! I mean, Across The Sea is one of my favourite songs, but when he says "I wonder how you touch yourself" I thought it was a little bit odd for the song. I've noticed a lot of things like that on the Red Album, it's almost like he's trying to be more... badass, maybe? I think it's funny though.
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I thought it was Scott who wrote the lyrics?
Rivers wrote the lyrics, but Scott wrote the music.
Just because someone is poor and/or finds themselves stationed in a lower place in life, without their control, doesn't mean they aren't worthy of loving and being loved, and I think that this is what this song is really about.
Yeah i think of it like Radiohead's "creep". Well meaning guy can't help but sound awkward when talking to hot girl. The alternating sound I think show the contrast between his intentions and how he comes off to her.
