"Mary" as written by and Charles Fink....
Oh the cold wet wind blew over the heather
You wrote Charlie and Mary for forever
On the back of a rock
That you picked up on the way
And in that perfect moment
I nearly ruined it
By saying I love you
And nearly meaning it
But you know I would never waste those words
Oh when I last saw Mary
She lied and said it was her birthday
Oh when i last saw Mary
She lied and said it was her birthday

But then she
Tried to kiss me
And I said don't bother
You know we don't really love one another
And there's no use
In burning out this flame
Oh but then things changed in a way I couldn't predict
She said I love you and it suddenly clicked
That she was only saying what she wanted me to hear
And I said
Please don't lie to me Mary
And I said
Please don't lie to me Mary

I said
Please don't lie
Oh it makes me cry in bed
I said
Please don't lie
Oh it makes me cry in bed
I said
Please don't lie
Oh it makes me cry in bed
And she said
Shut your mouth
You don't know what you're talking about
Oh she said
Shut your mouth
You don't know what you're talking about

General CommentI always thought I was alone in thinking that most people believe they're in love because they think they should be, not because they are. It's nice to know I'm not alone.

    General Commenti agree with ASatisfiedMind.

i broke up with a guy the moment he told me he loved me...
...the third day we started dating.

    sounds harsh.

but i dont like those words to be used lightly.

My InterpretationI always thought this song was really sad. Charlie and Mary like each other but Charlie is unsure about how much he likes her, "You know we don't really love one another" He's not going to say he loves her until he means it. She says she loves him, and he tells her not to say it if she doesn't mean it.
But she really does love him and tells him to shut up, he doesn't know what he's talking about.
He might not love her, but she loves him.
It's sad. I can imagine her saying "Shut your mouth you don't know what you're talking about" and almost crying because her heart is a bit broken, she thought they loved each other "Charlie and Mary for forever" but he didn't quite feel the same.

General Commentreally simple song, in terms of lyrics, but the musical complexity and the way the song changes really makes it beautiful and meaningful.

General Commentthis song seems to be about how the nature of words isn't stable and how we can't put trust into words- they can be used to say things that aren't meant. Nearly meaning something isn't enough, somehow all the words in this song, like their relationship, truly fail to express what is meant. Maybe there's more truth in shutting mouths, in silence.

General Commentthis song always made me think of friends that think they should be in love at least she does, But in reality they aren't. "You know we don't really love one another And there's no use In burning out this flame" They are obviously young.

MemoryThis song came into my head at a really weird time. At that time I was hanging out with people that my friends were friends with. People I knew mainly through my friend who was this guy I liked, almost.. endlessly, throughout many years. And he sort of knew it. Even though we had become very good friends. I remember once long before this, he caught me crying in his bathroom because he refused to kiss me as a gamble that then I would make out with his friend. And I ran to his room and cried on the bed. He came in, in the dark and said 'you know i just dont like you that way' he tried to make me feel better.

Another thing is that I've tried to kiss him and he's turned away from it probably about three times before.

But by this time in our lives we had become so sweet and open with eachother. We had almost fully admitted our like, in friendly manners in cars. Then that one night at the party I saw into his emerald glowing eyes and I knew he was happy with me, but it wasn't real. "She said I love you and it suddenly clicked
That she was only saying what she wanted me to hear
    And I said
Please don't lie to me Mary"
    .
So I see that he would pretend to be in love with me, even if he really wasn't. It's so sweet of him to do that I almost cry.
While at the same time it also goes both ways. Not that I can imagine my friend crying. But I know to a certain extent I am over him, and have been through out all of the years we got to know eachother and I tried to get him with me still. So the mary is also me, pretending that no matter what I do I will always love him. When the truth is that I've gotten over him long ago and I really can't stop loving others.
To end this long personal message, I'd like to admit that I have been studying the secret language of birthdays for about five years now, and I know every day by heart. I literally celebrate many days. As if they are my own.

And the last line is about the person not being able to really face the truth. The whole song is about that. And feeling utterly and hopelessly serious in needing to face it.- You have one birthday. You don't love me. - False!

My InterpretationI've always thought that this was about a guy who was too self-obsessed to realise that he was with a girl who was totally in love with him.
"When I last saw Mary, she lied and said it was her birthday" to me shows this pretty well. He runs into her a while after they split up and it's her birthday. He assumes she's lying because he's convinced that he'd remember something like that, when in reality he's too wrapped up in himself and has forgotten.
Charlie thinks he's in a very false relationship because he can only see it from his point of view, while Mary can totally see through him. When she says "Shut your mouth you don't know what you're talking about", she's telling him not to speak on her behalf, because he's so egocentric he couldn't possibly understand what she's feeling.
I feel very sorry for Mary to be honest.

General CommentI have a friend named Mary, who broke my best friend's heart.

She acts just like the Mary in this song. My Mary cheated, lied almost to the point where we didn't know what was real. But she was so cute that most guys are blind to her faults and her lies.
