I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Take a look you see I painted you a picture
It's black and white except the blood's a little richer
Down in the corner I gave it my signature
And then I titled it this one's for the winter
Check it out you see it's just a big disaster
I dedicate it to the fact that it's so hard for you to dream
A million heartbeats around you make it hard to sleep
Doesn't help you're freezing in your bed, your blankets aren't enough
All you want is someone there and all you'll say is "so what?"
[Chorus: ]
Love love, kiss kiss.... blah blah blah
You're making me sick
I wish you'd just stop showing off
For the rest of us that no one wants to love.
It's hard enough trying to drink another winter all alone
Love love, kiss kiss.... blah blah blah
Well do you find you like to fall in love with people that you're never gonna meet?
It's easier then breaking up and crying in the street
Do you curse the happy couple?
Do you cringe at wedding bells?
Do you drink up all the punch while you wish 'em all to hell
[Chorus: ]
You can't escape this fatal case of melancholia
It's in your face, in every place you go it's stalking you
And there are days when we all say we feel we just can't go on
But you've felt this way all along
[Chorus: ]
It's black and white except the blood's a little richer
Down in the corner I gave it my signature
And then I titled it this one's for the winter
Check it out you see it's just a big disaster
I dedicate it to the fact that it's so hard for you to dream

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Just A Little Lovin'

I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
Jesus christ, the lyrics don't have to be so intricate and dark all the fucking time. Was "I've got a big fat fuckin bone to pick with you my darling" put so cryptically? no. but it got the point across and we all loved it. Love love, kiss kiss blah blah blah.
Fuck off with your PDAs, theres no better way to put it. it's a good bitter song.
I'm sick of people bashing this new album because the lyrics arent as "depressing"
Do you really want a collection of albums that sound exactly the same?
wait... where's this from? new cd?
i like... a lot. :) scratch that. i love it.
I heard that this song was about Matt's wife, whom he is not happy with.
pretty sure that isnt it plus, danny wrote it
leak: megaupload.com/
also, in my opinion, worst song on the album.
I think this song is a very creative way to describe an unhappy marriage. I love it! Dan sounds so great in it!
Its very poppy, yet dismal, don't get pissed but its teetering on emo...But I like it its one of my favorites from the album, and Dan is the greatest, though i love Matt's verse, usually the verse that is sung by the other singer turns out to be my favorite in the song, and this is the same case. Really I think anyone is says fuck all the happy couples can understand this. Even if its a little vain, I must admit I am in the same boat.
This is my favorite song on the album.
I think it's about that person that never wants to settle down, the person we all know, who just wants to fuck and move on, and doesn't believe in love, but hey, what the fuck do i know
Anyways, I think this song is about a guy who is jealous about married couples ... or any couples really. "I wish you'd just stop showing off /For the rest of us that no-one wants to love."
