"The Lotus Eater" as written by and Mikael Lars Akerfeldt....
Liquid is in your throat
For hopeless delight
After all you fell in love with death
Life has aborted
All you've had and all you became

The night is calling, you pray forth

A barren waste is your land
Crops they were sown to die

This skin is a mirror
The eyes hover with ignorance
Hell throb from your lips
Sucked in and safe from the world of sleep

All years caring for a liar
The barren drift road is winding higher
You're a moth too close to the fire

You are stuck in a beautiful future
Changing and waiting and seeking the truth of it all

Fleeting in sorrow
Pushing your spirit away
Seeking the weakness of dislike
Whispered from the heart
To be, we're all in the mourning
To despair

[?]

Cries out: "The restless will also... die."

Resurrection covered with death
Drawing the life under one
A fact tied to the earth
The soul's a victim, a follower

Oh, mother!
[Incoherent growling]
For us to see
The blink of an eye

And the pride of a mother
Drawn close in a mother's son
And the love from a father
Was used by a father's son

Over warrior's token
Misspoken lives on
The language unimportant
So fair and so just

All the land is taken

Lyric CorrectionLiquid is in your throat,
    For hopeless delight.
After all you fell in love with death,
    Life has aborted.
All you've had and all you became,
The night is calling, you pray forth.

The barren waste is your land,
Crops they were sown to die.

    The skin is a mirror,
    Empty eyes hollow with ignorance,
    Health runs from your lips,
Tucked in and safe in a world of sleep.

All years caring for a liar.
Barren rift road is winding higher.
You're a moth to close to the fire.

You are stuck in a route of confusion
Changing and waiting and seeking the truth of it all.

    Fleeing your sorrows
    Pushing your spirit away

Sick of the weakness of the psyche
Whisper from the heart of evil
    Luring them all into despair
Resenting the goods of a savior

    Cries out
    The restless will also.. die

A selection culled from the damned
    Drawing a lifeline of one
A friend died in your room
And sought the birth of a follower

    Oh Brother!
    You are a killer
    And you target yourself

I wish that you had never come back
    For us to see
    The beckoning end

And the pride of a mother
Brought flaws in a mother's son,
And the love from a father
Was used by a father's son

    Overheard us talking
In a smoke of lost hope
    The language of our parting
    So clear and so true

    Overheard us talking

General Commentin greek mythology the lotus flower, when consumed, caused a person to forget about their woes and to leave their lives behind. although I dont believe this song has anything to do with the book Itry is referring to, it has the same idea. It sound to me as if the character is trying to forget his woes, including the divorce of his parents. he is pushing his friends away, and wallows in his own self pity: you are a killer and you target yourself. there seems to be hints of other problems from his past(All those years caring for a liar) but it is difficult to make much out of the broken imagery. either way, this song, like every other from opeth, kicks ass. Opeth is the best band of all time!

General CommentTo me, it seems to be about a suicide, and it sounds as if the narrator had attempted to help, but the subject was overwhelmed. "she" was most likely a mother, who left behind the father.

    General CommentYes...YES, YES!
    This is just brilliant.
    Watershed is blissfully good.
    Oh, more Opeth.
    What a masterpiece.

General CommentDon't ever bring politics up in an Opeth song. When it comes to their songs, they're beyond politics.

General CommentNot about politics. Actually appears to be about a marriage breakup. Which is supported by one of the images in the booklet...

General Commentchanging a little on what he just posted. He is still resentful of what she did, what he lost. He has been killing for years, aging sinfully and scornfully.
He was fueled by the pride and embellishments of his mother as well, and his father's expectations of him.

General Commentim gonna throw my little thing in. i not really into opeth, but this song caught my attention.

i did some research and it might be about a book with the same name. i say that because it kinda fits together, the book is basically about a guy who retires too early and tries to spend his money on an island. for example when it said flee from sorrow pushing your spirits away, it tells you that the guy is basically running from his problems. the last part of the song may describe what he was thinking when he went insane for the last six years of his miserable life in the book. the book is the same name of the song, i guess what i can say is check it out. thats jus my opinion.
