"A Drop In The Ocean" as written by and Zach Berkman Ron Pope....
A drop in the ocean
A change in the weather
I was praying that you and me might end up together
It's like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert
But I'm holding you closer than most 'cause you are my heaven

I don't wanna waste the weekend
If you don't love me pretend
A few more hours then it's time to go

And as my train rolls down the east coast
I wonder how you keep warm
It's too late to cry
Too broken to move on

And still I can't let you be
Most nights I hardly sleep
Don't take what you don't need from me

It's just a drop in the ocean
A change in the weather
I was praying that you and me might end up together
Its like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert
But I'm holding you closer than most 'cause you are my heaven

Misplaced trust and old friends
Never counting regrets
By the grace of God I do not rest at all

And New England as the leaves change
The last excuse that I'll claim
I was a boy who loved a women like a little girl

And still I cant let you be
Most nights I hardly sleep
Don't take what you don't need from me

It's just a drop in the ocean
A change in the weather
I was praying that you and me might end up together
It's like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert
But I'm holding you closer than most 'cause you are my

Heaven doesn't seem far away anymore, no no
Heaven doesn't seem far away
Heaven doesn't seem far away anymore, no no
Heaven doesn't seem far away, oh oh

A drop in the ocean
A change in the weather
I was praying that you and me might end up together
It's like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert
But I'm holding you closer than most 'cause you are my heaven
You are my heaven

General CommentI've been in love with this song for about 2 years now, but it's never made complete sense to me until now. I just figured out what it's about for me. You go into a relationship or whatever knowing it's going to be short term: we have this much time together and then for whatever reason, we have to go our separate ways. So it's not going to be serious, just about enjoying time together. But even though you know from the first moment it isn't going to last, you let yourself fall into it. And you feel so much more than you ever intended. And you dream, and imagine, even though you know it has to end, that you'll be together forever. That it'll never end. And then your time runs out, just as you always knew it would. And you're left feeling so much, and it's over, and there's absolutely nothing you can do. Nothing at all.

General CommentWhen he says a drop in the ocean, a change in the weather, he's talking about things that are completely irrelevant and unimportant. Things that don't matter in the whole scheme of things. Like him loving her is irrelevant, because she'll never love him back: "It's like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert." But to him, it doesn't matter because , she is his heaven, his everything.

The man is broken, and is having trouble letting go. and it makes it even worse that he is going away from her.

I think when he says he was a boy who loved a woman like a little girl just means how he was in over his head, like the drop in the ocean thinking it was something more then just a drop. Or a slight change in the weather would change people's daily routines.

Well overall it's a beautiful song.

My Interpretation"A drop in the ocean, a change in the weather"represent the littlest things that he wishes would somehow change her mind about him. "I was praying that you and me might end up together", is what he is praying for the whole song. Ron Pope compares "wishing for rain and I stand in the desert" to wishing he could be with her. The desert is like his life without her, and she is water. He wants her and needs her so desperately in his life, the same way as somebody in the desert would need water. There is no water in the desert, as the girl is not in his life. "But I'm holding you closer than most" contradicts what he has said prior to this. I think this means that she is physically there, but they are not together. "cause you are my heaven" means that she is the best thing in his life, that she his heaven on earth.

My Interpretation"A drop in the ocean, a change in the weather" he is saying that he wants a change in life and he thinks it would be as natural as the weather changing "I was praying that you and me might end up together" he wants them to be together and he's praying for it "It's like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert" it's pointless it's almost impossible for it to happen "But I'm holding you closer than most 'Cause you are my heaven" he really just loves spending the time with her and he says that she is his heaven "I don't want to waste the weekend if you don't love me just pretend" he doesn't want to waste the little time he has with her and he knows she doesn't or love him that way but he wishes she acted that way "Then it's time to go" he says that she should go because she doesn't want or can't be with him "And as my train rolls down the east coast" he has to go to the east coast "I wonder how you keep warm"
she has nobody to keep her warm "It's too late to cry to broken to move on" there's no use crying and everything in their relationship is broken and they can't move on normally (such as he might've said he loved her and she didn't feel the same way) you might not agree but I think this is hat it means 'cause i feel this way about a boy (he likes another girl)

Song MeaningIn this song, he is talking about being in the "friend zone". I have always listened to this song ever since I heard it used in The Vampire Diaries. Im sure, most of us got this song from there too, since Ron Pope is not a mainstream artist. "A drop in the ocean. A change in the weather. I was praying that you and me might end up together". Means he is still friends with her, but the whole time he has always wanted more. She may have rejected him in the past, but she wish to remain friends, and he accepts it, instead of walking away from the friendship. His emotions is further exemplified in the next two lines. "It's like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert. But I'm holding you closer than most 'cause you are my heaven? He needs her badly in his life. More than just a friend, and he is having a hard time moving on and meeting new people, because she is still his "heaven". This next line shows she has no romantic feelings from him. "I don't wanna waste the weekend. If you don't love me pretend". This song becomes sad in this next verse. It seems she is being selfish by holding on to him, instead of setting him free. "Don't take what you don't need from me".

General CommentOow. this song is like one of the most beautiful song ever!
I think it's about unanswered love. Or am I totally lost? I dunno, I guess the song means different things to different people. To me, it's about being unhappily in love.

General Commentthis song is definitely about a changed relationship and unrequited love.
"a change in the weather" implies that maybe there was once something, but now the other has moved on, since the speaker still prays that they'll end up together.
i think "i hold you closer than most" means that even though most people would've given up, or don't appreciate this person, he sees so much in her and feels like she is something ethereal.

in the first verse, he knows that it's pretty much over, and since he's kinda in a stage where he realizes this, but is too attatched to start moving on he asks her to at least pretend like she still loves him just while their together for this short time
[i think it also implies a long distance relationship since he's talking about his train going down the east coast and not wasting the weekend]

also, the line "dont take what you don't need from me" is kind of like asking her to not take advantage of his affection and the dilehma he's in. he's willing to give her everything, but since he knows it's not working out, he's asking her to not abuse him by asking for more than what she really needs and making it even harder for him.

the second verse shows that he doesn't regret it, even if its painful and that he can't get rest and move on because he loves this girl so much.

okay, that was kind of a lot, but that's what i got from it. i absolutely LOVE this song- one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard and i was lucky enough to see the most beautiful dance to this the first time i heard it that had the most amazing choreography by natasha lewis that pretty much brought me to tears. it was so beautiful.

My InterpretationI think the feelings expressed in the song are a sort of disappointment and lack of belief regarding the inevitable end of a romance. 'A drop in the ocean, a change in the weather' I think the drop represents a random point in time or a random occurrence and the change in the weather represents the change of the dynamic of the relationship. 'Praying that you and me might end up together', shows that there was a plan for a long term commitment (marriage or something of the sort). 'Wishing for rain as I stand in the desert' this is what gives away the deterioration of the love, as the desert is dry and dull while the rain isn't perfect but represents movement. In my eyes that gives away that the passion in the relationship is ending, like its getting boring or there is nothing more to learn about each other... something like that. There is also a hint of a long distance relationship as it seems that the lyrical 'me' is traveling down for a weekend... i think the reference might suggests that maybe the distance has part of the blame. Otherwise he strengthens the idea that he is devastated and still in love while he feels that the passion is gone but since he is madly in love he still wants to try and asks not to get taken advantage of. But yea i dont wanna bore anyone any longer :P

    My InterpretationMy thoughts:
A drop in the ocean is insignificant; but later it becomes a change in the weather. A change of weather is often used as a signal for change in attitude or change in the circumstance. I think the drop in the ocean is showing an insignificant happening but ends up changing the weather; I think it must be the drop becoming rainfall of some sort, maybe a storm even. Rainfall and storms usually represent something bad occurring, like her not loving him anymore. He won’t accept that though and is still praying they’ll end up together. I think the desert and rain scenario has to do with him hoping for something he knows there is no chance of occurring; aka her loving him again. On to the part about his excuse being that he loved a women like a little girl. I take it that he is comparing himself to a little girl. The parts before this talk about normal changes like in New England the leaves are changing. I think he’s saying he can’t change and get over her and his excuse is he loves her like a little girl. Little girls get attached and I think he feels this way about her.
