"High Hopes In Velvet Ropes" as written by and Matt Squire Alex Johnson....
Baby, take it off
Checkered thighs on a pretty pawn
This vicious velvet ain't enough
So baby, make a move
My neon eyes are set on you
The devil's language taste of lust

Tell me what can I say to make your body come this way
We're only two in a crowded room were others fade away
It's only a crime if I get caught (only if I, If I get caught)
It's only a line if it gets bought

I woke up 12:05, I left that room with no goodbye
And now I'm on my way back home
It's not that your lipstick failed
But girl I was just born to bail
I do it better on my own

Tell me what can I say to make your body come this way
We're only two in a crowded room were others fade away
It's only a crime if I get caught (only if I, If I get caught)
It's only a line if it gets bought

It's the same game I play 'till the give becomes the take
It's the same game I play 'till the bend, The bend becomes the break

Baby, take it off
Checkered thighs on a pretty pawn
This vicious velvet ain't enough
So baby, make a move
My neon eyes are set on you
The devil's language taste of lust

It's only a line if it gets bought

It's the same game I play 'till the give becomes the take (what can I say, what can I say)
It's the same game I play 'till the give becomes the take (Why can't you come this way)
It's the same game I play 'till the give becomes the take (what can I say, what can I say)
It's the same game I play 'till the bend, The bend becomes the break

My InterpretationI like to think of this as one big metaphor for a one night stand. Or can it even be classified as a metaphor when some parts are so blatantly obvious?

Ignoring the first verse which is basically the mutual attraction the two share in the bar and/or club they're in.

"Tell me what can I say to make your body come this way
We're only two in a crowded room where others fade away
It's only a crime if I get caught (only if I, If I get caught)
It's only a line if it gets bought"

This verse combines the idea of the first verse with the mutual attraction as well as thinking of ways for the two to actually meet up. "It's only a crime if I get caught" makes me think that if the girl doesn't suspect he's only staring at her with the intent of a one night stand, it will continue as planned and not result nothing. "It's only a line if it gets bought" reminds me of that phrase, "hook, line, and sinker," meaning a person believes you completely.

"I woke up 12:05, I left that room with no goodbye
And now I'm on my way back home
It's not that your lipstick failed
But girl I was just born to bail
I do it better on my own"

Obviously this is the morning after sex where the girl is, presumably, still asleep and the guy leaves. He's basically saying "no hard feelings, but I'm not one for commitment."

"It's the same game I play 'till the give becomes the take
It's the same game I play 'till the bend, The bend becomes the break"

These two lines signify that he's done this before and that it's a continuous routine that he's accepted. It's the same routine he's done over and over and eventually he gains more control over the situation because the "give becomes the take".

But yeah, I love this song. It's bold, sexy, and it just goes to show you how much variance the Cab can have in one album.

General Commenti finally get what this song is about. after like listening to it a million times. its about like getting what you want no matter what. or at least thats what i think. getting what you want, whatever it be, whether it be like things like money, or a relationship/girl or guy to be with.
i love how the 'its the same game' chorus isn't till half way through the song, its like the first half builds ancticipation :D.

General Commentbtw i think hes saying lovers fade away instead of liars fade away.

and i think he says, or well sings:
its only a crime if i get caught
only if i, if i get caught
its only a line if it gets by

    either line or lie lol.

General CommentThese are the lyrics from the booklet:

    Baby, take it off
Checkered things on a pretty pawn
    This vicious velvet ain't enough
    So baby, make a move
My neon eyes are set on you
The devil's language tastes of lust

Tell me, what can I say
To make your body come this way
We're only two in a crowded room
    Where others fade away

    It's only a crime
    If I get caught
It's only a line if it gets bought

    I woke up, 12:05
I left that room with no goodbye
And now I'm on my way back home
It's that not your lipstick failed
But girl, I was just born to bail
I do it better on my own

Tell me, what can I say
To make your body come this way
We're only two in a crowded room
    Where others fade away

    It's only a crime
    If I get caught
It's only a line if it gets bought

    It's the same game
I play till the give becomes the take
    It's the same game
    I play till the bend
    The bend becomes the break

    Baby, take it off
Checkered things on a pretty pawn
    This vicious velvet ain't enough
    So baby, make a move
My neon eyes are set on you
The devil's language tastes of lust
