Naked in the bathtub
Sittin' on the porcelain
Waiting for that little hurricane to pull your torso in
The water don't run, just drips like rain
Still drips like a painkiller drips to the veins
Fill it up
With a bag of that happy stuff
'Cause the way she runs out, you can tell she ain't had enough
Good times goddess
My goodness
Got finger nail polish autopilot foot prints
With a smile that's stitched to the fabric of bedtime tales and
Keep them tits out of the attic
The mouth of madness
Loud and manic
The motive of the bird going south on the Atlas
Picture a hole
Put your hero in
Envision the gold
Now zero in
Been watching your night train track for the last few stops
With no desire to hop it
How did we end up in your apartment
Pocket full of gossip says this ain't smart
When it's all said and done, can't get restart
But I'll be damned if I don't wanna kiss you
Hard

Shoulda known better not to fuck wit' you
Ain't got nothin' but too much to lose
Lost in the rush don't know what to do
That drug got you like I want you

Shoulda known better not to fuck wit' you
Ain't got nothin' but too much to lose
Lost in the rush don't know what to do
That drug got you like I want you

I've got a restraining order
Against Satan's daughter
And I keep it at the bottom of this Jamison and water
And when we get there
You can sit there and stare
From behind your mascara and your thick hair
I'm aware of that pain you harbor
The same negative game to the names you martyr
Apart from the details and substance and whatnot
I fucks with that hunger of love pistol and gut rot
Bloodshot
Give me one shot, my shot
Propped up on enough talk to make time stop
The lines of chalk that Benjamin might cop
Killed the illustrations on the neighborhood sidewalks
Then all of a sudden she got silent
Pupils like marbles, hide behind the eyelids
Get away sticks go limping hole place
That fucked up smile sucked up most of her face
Truly beauty, the scene so surreal
And each criticism becomes redeemed

Swallow my words
No more judgment it's true
'Cause you look like what I feel like when I'm with you

Shoulda known better not to fuck wit' you
Ain't got nothin' but too much to lose
Lost in the rush don't know what to do
That drug got you like I want you

Shoulda known better not to fuck wit' you
Ain't got nothin' but too much to lose
Lost in the rush don't know what to do
That drug got you like I want you

    My Interpretation

theres lots of references to childhood-

With a smile that's stitched to the fabric of bedtime tales that Keep them kids out of the attic -her smile is formed out of the stories she grew up on, that formed her morals, "her inner compass" that kept the kids from doing things simply out of fear

Picture a hole Put your hero in -prince charming, all that stuff, shes looking to the drugs as something that will save her

The lines of chalk that benjamin might cop Killed the illustrations on the neighborhood sidewalks -reference to coke probably, comparing the amount of drugs you could get for $100 to the negative effects they have, replacing other forms of happiness, such as the simplicity of children playing with sideway chalk

-could also be their future if the drug use continues- chalk outlines of their dead bodies

The motive of the bird holdin' south on the atlas -birds migrate because its their instict, they do it to surive- the drugs control her to the degree she believes she needs them, that its part of her natural life and necessary

Then all of a sudden she got silent Pupils like marbles, hide behind the eyelids Get away sticks go limping hole place The smile sucked up most of her face Truly beauty the scene serene And each criticism becomes redeemed Swallow my words No more judgment it's true Cause you look like what I feel like when I'm with you

    • they have a moment- getting silent perhaps because the drugs are wearing off, or their burnt out from them. but he sees the truth in her eyes, the pain perhaps, and all the shit he was thinking about her, based on her reputation and whatnot, dissolves. he sees himself, and the pain we all have at some level, on her face, in such a raw form. the fact he is there in the first place, not knowing how he ended up at her apartment shows that he is in just as deep of a situation as she is, just a different form. he shoulda known better because he has been in that state before, but he loves her or something of that sort. he wants to help but cant, has been watching her train wreck but has no desire to abandon it regardless of the destruction it could cause.

"this is a really weak single, from a really weak album. Im disapointed. "

are you serious?, yeah it may be different, but this album comes off really strong to me, it shows that they can pull off different styles, and Slugs lyrics are just as strong.

you guys are tripping. He's just growing as we all do. I'm sure Slug doesn't expect you to like every song he writes so stop being so fuckin' critical. If you don't like it don't waste space by typing a bunch of asshole remarks

The motive of the bird going south on the Atmos’

    ^^^

Did anybody catch on to that line? This ties to how Slug refers to girls as birds (Bird Sings Why the Caged I Know). This just talks about the girl going down on him. Its a heavily sexual song, but this girl is drugged up.

Picture a hole Put your hero in Envision the gold Now zero in Been watching your night train track for the last few stops With no desire to hop it How did we end up in your apartment Pocket full of gossip says this ain’t smart When it’s all said and done, can’t get restart But I’ll be damned if I don’t wanna kiss you-- Hard

Basically a description of putting his dick in this chick and "going for the gold" which is to get off. And then "pocket full of gossip" might mean that this sexual encounter is kinda controversial. Maybe they are cheating on their partners with each other? But Slug doesnt care because he has wanted to fuck her so bad...

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
