I left you out
Inside my heart
How easily
This could be the start
And rip my life apart

Like a bowerbird collecting blue
See me gather words
To let you know
It's hard to let this go

But I'm making up my mind
I'll forget you in time

You still make me cry
Like a song of the east
That loses its centre
But always finds its way back home
Oh, how this bird has flown

So I'm making up my mind
Gonna rescue myself tonight
Yeah, I'm making up my mind
I'll forget you in time

I am leaving you
You are leaving me
We've sung our song
And we chose to roll on
Although this love never fades
It's time to forget the road we never traveled along

So I've made up my mind
Gonna rescue myself tonight
Yeah, I've made up my mind
I'll forget you in time

General CommentMy favorite song of his. Watched him perform it a couple of nights ago, he said it was about a girl here in Canberra that whenever he saw her, a spark went off inside, but he knew it would never be. He said it with almost a tear in the eye. I wanted to ask him, "Have you really forgotten her, and will you ever?"

You would think that writing a song about it that you have to sing for the rest of your life will not help him forget, but I think that despite the words in the song, he doesn't ever want to forget, just to let go of the desperation.

As sad and heart felt as this song is, I don't think he will ever forget her, just push the pain deep down and pretend its not there.

General CommentI agree that the person the narrator is singing about will never be forgotten by him(as seen in the line "this love never fades,"), but the heart of the issue regarding "forgetting" in time is that he will "rescue" himself by not devoting his heart to trying to save their relationship. He can't save it without her help, and to attempt to do so will only cause him more pain. It also is said "it's time to forget the road we never traveled along," which implies this is a relationship that always skirted the edge of seriousness, of commitment, and I think that is a big part of why it is hard for him to move on.

He's saying he's going to try to move along, because in the end, he'll have a healthier life that way. He loves her, and always will ... but sometimes you just have to admit defeat.

General CommentI agree with most of what you have both said, but I think that maybe it hadn't been a relationship YET. When the song says "it's time to forget the road we never traveled along," I feel it implies that he knew they couldn't be together, but that didn't stop him from falling in love, so when it came time to make a decision, he knew that there would be no future, so he left with what little heart he had left to save himself from more pain later.
