Don't you dare say that you weren't warned
that the end was coming soon
and your eyes shine like Oppenheimer's
as he talks about the boom

and he don't even taste the food he eats anymore,
and theres a space a place where his heart was before
and he don't even taste the food he eats anymore and
she don't want to dine alone
and he don't want to die alone
and she wants to live to eat

don't you dare say that you heard worse
that the end was coming soon.
and your eyes shine Enola Gay like
as you see the light of day

and he don't even taste the food he eats anymore,
and there's a space a place where his heart was before
and he don't even taste the food he eats anymore and
he don't want to dine alone
and she don't want to die alone
and he wants to eat to live

You're an elegant, little pelican
and all your sorrows are stacked amongst your nest of friends
and over time defined by how you carry on
and all of the torch songs you keep inside
and all of the songs that hang in the night
even after you're gone

General CommentShe likes destruction, he has either been destroyed or has destroyed something, i.e."she wants to live to eat, he wants to eat to live"

He can't taste food anymore but he still wants to eat to live, he can't get satisfaction from anything anymore, but he still wants to carry on.

Your eyes shine like Oppenheimer's is a reference to her affection for destruction or power, yet "she don't want to die alone" possibly for a reason other than company, maybe she needs someone to exert power over, he on the other hand, is just so downtrodden that he needs someone to keep him company so he does have something to live for.

In short, it's about two polar opposites coming together and making it work, however fragile the man is and however power-hungry the woman is.

Maybe, it is a little bit of a stretch.

General CommentI think it's about two cannibals who fall in love but then one of them eats the other.

General CommentOppenheimer, boom, and Enola Gay = atomic bomb. Maybe those are references to "the end was coming soon".

General CommentOppenheimer talking about the boom: "If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one. Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."

General CommentShining eyes can either be from happiness or sadness, i.e. the formation of tears.

General CommentThe first line of the song is "Don't you dare say that you weren't warned".

Whenever somebody falls in love, they might say that colors seem brighter and food tastes better. The man is so out of love that he doesn't even taste food anymore. The next line goes on to say that he no longer has a heart. The only reason he still eats is simply to live. The only reason he doesn't leave the woman is because he doesnt want to live alone.

The woman, on the other hand, lives to eat; she is still deeply in love with him. Even though she has been warned that the end is coming, she refuses to give up on him because she doesnt want to lose him.

General Commenta common problem with relationships can be that you both come from the same set of friends. as a result, when a relationship falls apart, people take sides, and "...all your sorrows are stacked amongst your nest of friends...".

also, people seem to rate the validity of relationships by how long they last, which is addressed in that same little verse.

by the way, it is most likely "all of the tour songs", since honus does tour a lot.

General CommentYup, thisisjim, it is "torch songs."
"and all of the torch songs you keep inside"

From Wiki (b/c "torch songs" is a kinda old school term):

"A torch song is a sentimental love song, typically one in which the singer laments an unrequited or lost love, where one party is either oblivious to the existence of the other, or where one party has moved on. Female singers of the pop vocal tradition are referred to as "torch singers" when their repertoire consists predominantly of such material. Torch singing is more of a niche than a genre, and can stray from the traditional jazz-influenced style of singing, although the American tradition of the torch song typically relies upon the melodic structure of the blues.

The term comes from the saying, "to carry a torch" for someone, or to keep aflame the light of an unrequited love."

General CommentI really very sure that the firs line actually says "Don't you dare say that you weren't warned"

It makes a hell of a lot more sense.
