I can't believe I made it here
Today I'm afraid of yesterday
I wrote this letter to you, my dear
In case, afraid, this fades away

I say baby, babe I've loved you a long time
I try harder just to know you're all mine
I say baby, babe I've loved you a long time
I go happy knowing that you're alright

I called today, but missed you again
Today's the day I go up in flames
I sent the money to you, my dear
Today's the day I burn away

I say baby, babe I've loved you a long time
I try harder just to know you're all mine
I say baby, babe I've loved you a long time
I go happy knowing that you're alright

I say baby, babe I've loved you a long time
I try harder just to know you're all mine
I say baby, babe I've loved you a long time
I go happy knowing that you're alright

General CommentI disagree with it being about the end of a relationship. I think it's about the beginning of a relationship. "I cant believe I made it here, Today I'm afraid of yesterday." That sounds to me like the beginning of an intense relationship, and being afraid yesterday when he was alone. Especially later in the verse " I wrote this letter to you my dear
    Incase, afraid, this fades away."

The middle of the song reminds me of how when you first really love someone, every little setback like a phone call not returned, or going a day without seeing the other person is so devastating.

Just the overall feel of the song is like when you meet someone and have such intense overwhelming emotions because of that new relationship and the vulnerability that comes with it, but also the comfort and excitement of having someone to wake up for each day.

General CommentAnd as far as the "I've loved you a long time" Hasn't anyone ever felt that way when you've met someone who you feel like you've been looking for your whole life?

General CommentSoldier? Suicide? lol It's about moving away and moving on.

I believe the girl is someone who he had began an emotional connection with, but because of their lives taking different paths they never got together. So I agree with it being the start, but there was no relationship.

Remember a lot of songs are wrote on experience and personal circumstances.
So it's never too far from home.

General CommentI don't see it as the end of a relationship because I don't think there ever was a relationship. I think it came close to it, but never happened. "Today I'm afraid of yesterday"--possibly afraid of looking back at yesterday for fear of it making him sad to remember the good times. "Yesterday" could have also been the fight that ended everything just as things were getting good. The girl's sure that she doesn't want anything anymore, or perhaps the narrator has become a bit paranoid, thinking that her ignoring his phone calls means she's not interested anymore. In any case, he still loves her and wants her and would take her back in an instant, but respects her decision to not go for the relationship, hence, "I go happy knowing that you're all right."

My Interpretationi thought it was about suicide... because most of it's in past tense...

" I say baby, babe I've loved you a long time
I try harder just to know you're all mine
I say baby, babe I've loved you a long time
I go happy knowing that you're alright "

General Comment3rd line of 1st verse: I wrote this letter to you my dear

2nd line of 2nd verse (not chorus): today's the day i go up in flames

I love this song. it speaks to me. it reminds me of a past relationship of mine, with a guy i had liked for a really long time (i say baby, babe, I've loved you a long time), and we were together for a while, but it ended up not working out. it ended peacefully though (i grow happy knowing that you're all right). and something about the line "today's the day i go up in flames" just really strikes me. truly a brilliant song, and a brilliant band as well.

it's different to the likes of we are rockstars,
i could visualise the killers singing a song like this though, & i don't particularly like them,

General CommentI loooooove this song, it's my favourite at the moment. It's definitely about the end of a relationship. "I can't believe we've made it here, today I'm afraid of yesterday" because she dumped him yesterday? And then "I wrote this letter to you my dear" him maybe trying to get her back. And "I try harder just to know you're all mine", he's still longing for her and "I grow happy knowing that you're alright" possibly he's accepting that he won't get her back, so he'll settle for knowing that she's ok? My ideas haha =) xxx
