i'll see what you want me to see
through rose-colored glasses
i can't see the blood in my hand
now you're over, you're so over
all over my head
i pray to God i find my way back to something familiar
please tear me from this contraband
now it's over, it's so over
it's under my bed

the painting's worn pale
your eyes have started fading
were they ever even really there
nothing to give with everything you take
the cracks in your smile make it impossible
to decipher something legible
your porcelain face and a heart of glass

no time for dependancy
we're going over at lightspeed
no scenery to stimulate
something older, we grow older
but nothing ever seems to change
i pray to God you lose your way
you're something peculiar
on one leg only, i'll still take a stand
i fall over, a tall order
these dolls i need to rearrange

the painting's worn pale
your eyes have started fading
were they ever even really there
nothing to give with everything you take
the cracks in your smile make it impossible
to decipher something legible
your porcelain face and a heart of glass

the painting's worn pale
your eyes have started fading
were they ever even really there
nothing to give with everything you take
the cracks in your smile make it impossible
to decipher something legible
your porcelain face and a heart of glass

a heart of glass, a heart of glass

General CommentTo the person above me, his previous stuff is all over Youtube, along with the david-cook.org boards. They have links that'll let you download the entire album, as well as some of his stuff with Axium.

This is probably one of my favorite's off of Analog Heart. I really wish I knew what the song meant though. Everytime I think I have an idea, I come up with something else. But overall, I think it's about realizing that the girl it's referring to has lost her luster in the relationship. Just my idea of it anyway.

General CommentTo the person above who commented to me, I know :) I have been listening to them all the time. I still want an "official" copy. I hope it comes back, I don't want to pay 500 on ebay, haha.

General CommentTo me, the song is about a guy in love with a woman that's been through a lot and has a really fragile heart that she's afraid to take a chance with.

Porcelain face makes me think of a girl that's really emotional and could easily break down, maybe. Heart of glass I take to mean her fragile heart that has been broken before. The pale paintings and fading eyes is what gives me the impression she's been put through a lot. "Nothing to give with everything you take" sounds like she's letting his love in but not able to return it.

The part about moving at lightspeed but nothing changing sounds like they're falling incredibly fast for each other but nothing's changing because she won't allow it. And him praying she loses her way is him praying she'll take a chance and let herself get lost in them together.

Then again, there are parts in the song that make it sound like a woman that's unfaith to him. But I'm finding more to back up the original meaning I've derived from the song.

General CommentI feel like the whole Analog Heart CD was about breaking up from a long term relationship. I see that in this song right away especially from the word dependency. But I will start from the beginning, i think this girl has hurt him over and over but is always able to talk him into believing thats its all ok, even when its not. Hence the "i'll see what you want me to see through rose colored glasses (meaning seeing something through the best light, even when its bad) and the "i can't see the blood in my hand" is saying its obvious she has hurt him but he ignores the pain and stays with her. but this time he is done, won't take it anymore. and (i pray to God i find my way back to something familiar) is his hopes he can stop the pain and get out of this awful cycle. "the painting's worn pale" signifies their relationship growing thin,
"your eyes have started fading" ( her love towards him its fading, she isn't caring anymore)
"were they ever even really there" (him wondering how pure their love really ever was, did she ever really give him 100%??). "nothing to give with everything you take" (i think he feels she uses him). "the cracks in your smile make it impossible
to decipher something legible" (he is trying to read her but she is so manipulative, that he doesn't know what to believe). "no time for dependancy
we're going over at lightspeed" (saying its easy to fall back into the same routine and just take her crap, but this time its really over). "no scenery to stimulate
    something older, we grow older
but nothing ever seems to change" (saying they have been through these same fights plenty of times before and they only difference is that they are getting older, and even though they should be maturing and growing out of it, the same crap keeps repeating itself. "i pray to God you lose your way" (he wishes she would realize the mistake she is making). "on one leg only, i'll still take a stand" even though she has broken him with all this hurt he is still strong enough to take a stand and tell her its over.

General Commenti thought the line was "the paint is worn bare"?

either way, this song is brilliant. "i pray to god i find my way back to something familiar, please tear me from this contraband." this song is full of beautiful word play and imagery, and david cook has definitely impressed me with this song. favorite off analog heart. it's not that difficult to pull meaning from.

(when he sings "the cracks in your smile make it impossible to decipher something legible," i just beam at my ipod. perfect.)
