"Many Shades of Black" as written by and Brendan Benson John Anthony White....
Go ahead, go ahead and smash it on the floor
Take whatever is left, and take it with you out the door
See if I cry
See if I shed a single sorry tear
Can't say that it's been that great
No in fact it's been a wasted worried year

[Chorus]
Everybody sees
And everyone agrees
That you and I are wrong
And it's been that way to long
Take it as it comes
And be thankful when it's done
There's so many ways to act
And there's many shades of black
There's so many shades of black

Let it out, let it all out
Say what's on your mind
You can kick and scream and shout and say things that are so unkind
Yeah-see if I care, see if I stand firm or if I fall
Cause in the back of my mind, and on the tip of my tongue
Is the answer to it all

[Chorus]

Yeah there's many shades of black

[Chorus]

Cause there's many shades of black
There's so many shades of black
Yeah there's any shades of black
There's so many shades of black
Yeah there's many shades of black
There's so many shades of black
And there's many shades of black
There's so many shades of black

Go ahead...

General CommentAnyone understand the last line in the second stanza? It sounded like wasted free (either literally wasting an otherwise free year or "wasted-free" as in drunkless) to me but I doubt it's right.

This song is clearly about a break-up. The guy thinks it is enough and does not regret breaking up.

General Commentamazing song ....you know, i think 'many shades of black' could mean that are many things are so wrong in this paticular relationship, but they wanted to stick with it despite the bad stuff. Everyone seems see the how wrong things are but they didn't at first, and i guess they have move one now..

General CommentAhhm thank-you mithi i've always believed it to be "wasted, worried year".

this song is really honest and literal.

General CommentI always heard wasted leap year, i think he was just trying to be clever, and in a way make it seem like even longer than a usual year. But yeah, I heard leap year from day one, and am listening now and still did haha, could be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time

General Commentokay so it's about a breakup, but what do the central lines mean then?

There's so many ways to act
and there's many shades of black

This seems to be the main part of the song but I don't see what it means. IdeaS?

    General Commentmaybe when it says
    "Everybody sees
    And everyone agrees
That you and I are wrong
And it's been that way too long"
they're talking about everybody saying that the singer and his significant other shouldn't be together so they're just deciding to take what people are saying to heart and break up. it would fit with the rest of the whole 'break-up' theory about the rest of the lyrics.

General CommentWhen it says "there's many shades of black," it could be a reference to what Henry Ford said about his cars in the early 1900s:"you can have any color as long as its black"[i'm paraphrasing]

it could be like, he's only had one choice [his current girlfriend/lover] this whole year and he can do whatever he wants as long as it has to do with her, like he's trapped.
