"I've Been Asleep For A Long, Long Time" as written by and Timothy John Baker....
I've been asleep for a long, long time
Blond hair to brown and then brown to white
My ma is buried beside my dad
But I was asleep for all of that

I shut my eyes for a moment's rest
Cause I get so tired
What thing transpired while my body slept?
Beset my mind

All the schools that I went to have all been closed
And all of my teachers are dead I suppose
The songs that we sung have all gone quiet
What happens below as you sleep at night?

I shut my eyes for a moment's rest
Cause I get so tired
What things transpired while my body slept?
Beset my mind

The river's up, the reeds are caught
Halfway across what never was
The water rose and swept in slow
When the reeds awoke they were half below

I've been asleep for a long, long time
Blond hair to brown and then brown to white
My ma is buried beside my dad
But I was asleep for all of that

I've been asleep for a long, long time
Blond hair to brown and brown to white
My ma is buried beside my dad
But I was asleep for all of that
For all of that

My InterpretationAt first, I interpreted the persona as one that was stuck in a coma or cryogenic cell like Fry from Futurama ("asleep") . I thought, like Fry, he was frozen or paralyzed (in a coma) for a long time and everyone he had known had changed, or was gone.

As I continued listening, however, I began to relate it to myself. It was there that I had the revelation that perhaps he wasn't really frozen or unable to wake up. Like me, perhaps he was just too apathetic to do anything; to wake up and realize the goodness in everything around him. His life passed him as he was "asleep". His hair turned colour ("blonde to brown then brown to white") perhaps meaning that he had physically gotten older, but had no wisdom to show for it (as is suggested since he was "asleep"). His parents died but he never really got to talk to or connect with them ("My ma is buried beside my dad/ but i was asleep for all of that"), or perhaps he wasn't there in their time of need, as in he didn't say goodbye or comfort them as a son.

He stops caring for a moments rest("i shut my eyes for a moments rest") because he's so tired of caring. Then he says "what things transpired while my body slept/ to beset my mind", which might mean he's asking what happened when he was not caring to make him so apathetic all the time.

His schools are closed, and the teachers he might want to talk to or thank (because later on in life you realize your teachers had a big impact on you) are all dead ("teachers... all dead i suppose") now that he's finally woken up (realized the wrongness of his laziness). "the songs that we sung have all gone quiet" - I think it means either they are all too old now to sing as innocent children do. "What happens below as we sleep at night?" - I think this is the persona wondering what at night makes you age, lose innocence.

"The river's up, the reeds are caught
    Halfway across what never was
The water rose and swept in slow
When the reeds awoke they were half below"

I think this part is just talking about how nature deals with time passing. I don't have too much of an idea of what this means other than urbanization. The rest is just repeat.

Overall an amazing song. The first time I realized what it meant was because it reflected off of me. I too am apathetic and ungrateful a lot of the time. Almost made me cry because of everything I missed. Time passes, but don't just pass the time.
