"Dancers to a Discordant System" as written by and Fredrik/kidman Thordendal....
Dancers to a Discordant system
Listen to the hidden tune
The essence of lies in note defined
As we dance to the dissonant sway
The choreography refined
Will subdued and shackled
Reason washed aside
Pledging our love to the chains
Our ignorance ever amplified

Blooded hands lead the waltz
We're trapped in the out of tune swirl
Still we set the show on continue mode
And dance to a discordant system

We accept the nails we're fed
Lies sharpened to bleed us silent
Muted from the pains
Defiance employed in vain
Any attempts to leave the dance
Invisibly suppressed
Questions unasked, we learn the steps
Eyes shut like all the rest

Unsuspecting, willing, blind, controllable herd
Pawns in a covert game conducted by hands we trust
Dominated, compliant and deceptable
Confident that we matter, we don't see that we're but dust

Committed to a lie we cannot see, cannot know nor comprehend
We're all asinine drones kept in the dark, kept in line

Confined, bereft of reason
Withering in toxicity
The deadly fumes deceit
And we all reek of complicity
Humbled, brought to our knees
By the weight of our own guilt
Our innocent ways the catalyst
To injustice and inhumanity

We dance, to appease
Compete in stupidity

Obscured faces file our points
Numbers fed to the machine
Still we stand in line for the next show
The human spine liquefied
What are we, but stupefied
Dancers to a discordant system

We believe, so we're misled
We assume, so we're played
We confide, so we're deceived
We trust, so we're betrayed

General CommentThis song is about how this world is NOT ideal.

We all know about what is great morale and how this world would be perfect, but how we do not even follow our own principles.
Thats because we follow the way of this world, and we just dance the dance, but dont even agree with it, so that way it is discordant.
We just do whatever we claim necesseray, and whatever is said to be rightious.
That whist there are so many morality impurities, and we say to ourselves that we cannot do anything about it.

    "Listen to the hidden tune
    - the essence of lies in notes defined
As we dance to the dissonant sway
    - the choreography refined"

Pretty obvious, the intro to what follows next:

    "Will subdued and shackled
    Reason washed aside
Pledging our love to the chains
    Our ignorance ever-amplified"

We feel safe to the way it is, even though its not the way (we want) it should be.
And we are often not even aware of it because we are already (here it comes again) dancing the dance anyway

    "Bloodened hands lead the waltz
We're trapped in the out of tune swirl
Still we set the show on continue mode
And dance to a discordant system"

Pretty much the same as above, we let do evil do its bidding (bloodened hands lead the waltz) go on (still we set the show on continue mode)

"We accept the nails we're fed
    - lies sharpened to bleed us silent"

We suffer on the system we live in, but not bad enough to make us act, and do something about it, but in the end it will still makes us suffer to bad, and it will be to late.

    "Muted from the pains
    Defiance employed in vain"

Once we cant do anything about anymore, we act like nothing happened, like its normal, you still suffer, but you get on with life, as we speak.

"Any attempts to leave the dance,
    Invisibly suppressed"

If we try to live our lives another way, we bounce on the wall of society, we now need the system to survive.

"Questions unasked, we learn the steps
    - eyes shut like all the rest"

We just follow the system because we can, its known to us so why leave a system that apperently works, thus we just keep on going like the rest.

    "Unsuspecting, willing, blind, controllable herd
Pawns in a covert game conducted by hands we trust"

We set our trust in (spriritual, presidents etc.) leaders, who have been given great power over all of us.

    "Dominated, compliant and deceptable
Confident that we matter - we don't see that we're but dust"

We follow these leaders, and still believe we can do whatever we want, instead we still follow the system made by the leaders.

"Committed to a lie we cannot see, cannot know nor comprehend
We're all asinine drones kept in the dark, kept in line"

Due all rules and complicated measures, we cannot see the power that has been taken over us, and we are not even aware of it.

    "Confined, bereft of reason
    Withering in toxicity
    - the deadly fumes of deceit
And we all reek of complicity"

We dont know the basics of life anymore due to this complex system, so its easy for leaders to lie to us on a massive scale, even if it includes war and killing.

    "Humbled, brought to our knees
By the weight of our own guilt
    Our nescient ways the catalyst
    To injustice and inhumanity"

Because of the rules and justice, we are easily brought to our guilt.
Because of the way the system is and we oblige to it, wars and injustice and inhumanity still exist, simply because we dont act against it.

    "We dance - to appease
    Compete in stupidity"

We follow the rules of this wicked system, so we can get some status and ease, but we follow a system that works against us, wich makes us stupid.

    "Obscured faces file our points
    - numbers fed to the machine"

Quite simple, with this simple everyone has a number, literally, making us less important, and no one cares.

"Still we stand in line for the next show
    The human spine liquefied
    What are we, but stupefied
    Dancers to a discordant system"

We still follow the discordant system, even though its bad, because we havent got the guts to stand against it, we still dance to it.

"We believe - so we're misled
We assume - so we're played
We confide - so we're deceived
We trust - so we're betrayed"

We get used because we let people using us.
If there is trust, there has to be reason to trust, because we get betrayed, such is with all of above.
Because of the irony in the system we live, its discordant, and we just dance to it.

I love this song because the subject is something that bothers me for some time.
And I agree totally with Meshuggah.

Song MeaningIf obZen is a concept album about the human condition in a kind of perverted, demented new age era, then this track, with its melancholy melodies towards the end, affirms that the protagonist of obZen - so convinced and empowered during Pineal Gland Optics and Pravus - has no option but to acknowledge that his faith will always be betrayed by the discordant nature of reality. The protagonist stares at the abyss of life drained of meaning, purpose and belief.

General CommentI agree with you 100% Thundermane. I also think this song is saying that we as people just refuse to break the monotony and continue to live our lives in the evil and corrupt system. It seems we would rather go on with our lives than challenge the system.

General CommentA prospective at the world: we are all drones, the protagonist too. A summary of the album.

The music in the end, when the vocals have quit, is in fact the waltz, reminding the listener that this affects him too, he shouldn't just discard the album and move on with his life.

Those were my perceptions on the album: as a concept album about the destruction and rewiring of an enlightened man, that enlightent then serving as the point of the album; that we are all just float with the stream, consumed by a vision of life laid out by those before us, already programmed and running, impossible to change.

    General CommentThat's good insight.

Actually, now that I think on it, both Catch 33 and obZen (and maybe even to some extent Nothing), at the bottom, seem to be about how enlightenment/wakening up goes awry because reality is conditioned in such a way that everything exceeding the modus operandi of whatever (be it social interactions or the logic behind human reasoning) hits a brick wall relatively quickly. This forces us all to become impotent drones that have very little to do except "Suffer in Truth." Subjectivity becomes redundant in relation to the overall mode of operation.

General Comment"Dancers" seems to continue the theme of powerlessness and the insignificant speck on the universe known as humanity as found in a song like "Straws Pulled at Random." This time around, however, Haake exposes the lie we have come to believe – that we are somehow in control. In actuality, we dance to the very system that suppresses us; we lull ourselves into complacency as we gleefully accept the great untruth – that we actually matter. The cosmic ironies that ooze from the last stanza are especially ominous.

It's a bleak Meshuggah song – go figure.

General CommentFor me, this song describes society and how it controls people. We are definitely under the control of society. Unless we educate ourselves and learn to recognize all the shit that's going around us, we will be destroyed,

General CommentYeah, control is the headword for this song. Kinda 1984-like theme...We think that we act on our own free will but we're controlled and surpressed, and we don't even know it.
