i wanna hold you
til the mountains turn into sand
oh my god!
what happened to all those days
before we were bruised
before we were cut loose
to drown in your wake

i cant breathe underwater
like i used to
'fore i met you

i, just cant remember
january, straight through december
my collective memories are in shambles
so are my scruples
i'm outside your window
throwin bricks at the moon

i cant breathe underwater
like i used to
'fore i met you

General CommentI don't hear "What I been through..." I hear "What happened to..." Is it just me, or does anyone else hear this? Anyway, I love this song. Does anyone know what he means by breathing underwater? I know water symbolizes emotion/the unconscious, but I'm still not sure.

General CommentYeah, I'm pretty sure it's "What happened to all those days".

General CommentI take the water part to mean that he;s changed so much for her, but he's still "throwin bricks at the moon" trying to get her attention

General CommentIt means he can't do what he used to since she sucked the life out of him.

It's a good and a bad thing. He's calmed down, or so that's how I take it.

General Commenthe could be making a reference to the little mermaid/any other merpeople-regular people love story with "...i can't breathe underwater like i used to...".

as i recall, a mermaid (merman?) and man (or woman) can't be together unless the mer-person makes the sacrifice of living on land for the rest of their life.

but then, i haven't seen the little mermaid since i was, you know, 6.

    General CommentIt's simple.
    He's in love.
his memories from before he met her are in shambles because they don't matter anymore, he has her.
his scruples are in shambles because he'd do anything for her.

General CommentWhat are you all? Crack babies?

This song is about him not being strong as he was before he met her. She has changed even his memories, his life before her. Therefore his scruples also change, because he doesn't want to lose her. He wants to reach to her, but he doesn't know what to do, he just throws bricks at the moon and not to her window, because he is not strong anymore, he doesn't know what to do since they're bruised, cut loose, etc. He wants her back, but he's lost.

    Peace out.

Song MeaningI interpret it as a declaration of someone's love for another after things fell apart. The part of "I can't breathe under water like I used to 'fore I met you" had me for a while. What do you do to breathe under water without the aid of any apparatus? You hold your breath. Well you can't breathe under water if someone steals your breath - figuratively. Very beautiful twist on words, in my opinion. Other things like scruples in shambles and throwing bricks at the moon point to him acting out of character and his futile attempts to get her attention back (I relate this last part to the "throwing bricks at the moon" - throw bricks at the moon, they won't reach it). I feel I'm trying to interpret this song in a very simple minded way and will not say this is the exact meaning of Honus's words. He seems like a deep guy. Still, it's fun to try to build meanings of others' words.
