“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
This song is about murder. The protagonist observes a search party making their way along the mountain ridge and back into town in the early morning hours, seeking the dearly departed. They do not find the body, but the killer/protagonist regrets his terrible act, and considers the victim's relationship to the landscape and culture of the region. Jesse is a particularly ambiguous and asexual name; it can refer either to a friend or lover. The killer is haunted by the spirit of the victim, and finds it increasingly difficult to ignore what they have done. They have taken the life of a kindred spirit and mentor, and are lost without their guidance.
Did Pecknold write these lyrics? I'm deeply impressed with his frequent ambiguous annunciation ..wonderous/wanderers (noted above) is an example. The lyric works both ways. The ability to write lyrics which affect multiple ways is startling, brilliant, Jungian, engrossing, overwhelming. When i lost someone so dear, my hypersensitive mind continually found layers and connections in what should have been mundane events otherwise. Listening to this song i begin to fall back into that state of sensitivity. Jesse .. Jesus?... the psyche confessing it's darkness as loss, mourning and (survivor?) guilt overtake. <br /> 3/4 count..it's a waltz.. yes, beautiful. This may or may not have anything to do with the song..... but Ted Bundy disposed of multiple bodies on Tiger Mountain some of them still not identified. Their remains were found by hikers but only portions have been recovered four skulls I belive and multiple parts saying maybe up to 6 victims were buried there.
