Every day’s a distraction
All the animals just looking for action
And Emily’s free-styling rhymes
Smoking in the girl’s room to kill some time
Cause all they want is a girl who
Parties hard and doesn’t bother to argue
And nobody’s worse for the wear
Everybody’s cool with the “I don’t care”

Seventeen candles are burning bright tonight but I’ve a feeling
That she believes she’s a bit old for cake and gifts and party favors
Emily, everyone told her it don’t get much better which only upset her
Could this be as good as it gets?

Just as loud as a half-stack
Of vodka tonic bottled up in her backpack
She’s badder than big heavy Jane’s
She turns it all out but the fact remains
That all we do is talk about the future
Like there’s some way to control it
Why not just enjoy the ride?

Seventeen candles are burning bright tonight but I’ve a feeling
That she believes she’s a bit old for cake and gifts and party favors
Emily, everyone told her it don’t get much better which only upset her
Could this be as good as it gets?

She said if this is the nightlife I’d rather stay in
You call this a good time I just call it a trip
If this is as good as it gets then I’m packing up my shit and I’m gone

Seventeen candles are burning bright tonight but I’ve a feeling
That she believes she’s a bit old for cake and gifts and party favors
Emily, everyone told her it don’t get much better which only upset her
Could this be as good as it gets?

General CommentThis song is how i first discovered The Pink Spiders, on Hell's Kitchen. Since then, they've been my favourite band :).
It's about a girl who's had bad habits and is turning seventeen, but she's not sure of her future and such. It's pretty straight-forward.

My InterpretationAHHH! love this song!!! so this is how I figure:

    Every days a distraction
All the animals just looking for action
    And Emilys free-styling rhymes
Smoking in the girls room to kill some time
Cause all they want is a girl who
Parties hard and doesnt bother to argue
And nobodys worse for the wear
Everybodys cool with the I dont care

*all the teens (animals) are just looking for trouble, emily (the main character) ss following their footsteps. cause those people she wants to be friends with only want someone who agrees with thier dangerous ways without questioning it. To not care about the consequences or of getting caught is a must.

Seventeen candles are burning bright tonight but Ive a feeling
That she believes shes a bit old for cake and gifts and party favors
Emily, everyone told her it dont get much better which only upset her
Could this be as good as it gets?

*She's turned seventeen and has that mentality the other kids placed on her, hence she believes she all grown up and over the idea of cake/gifts/etc. The other kids tell her this is the best year of her life. she expected more cause her life isn't that great.

Just as loud as a half-stack
Of vodka tonic bottled up in her backpack
Shes badder than big heavy Janes
She turns it all out but the fact remains
That all we do is talk about the future
Like theres some way to control it
Why not just enjoy the ride?

*She's now offically one of them. all the "good" kids are talking about college and adulthood now and she tries to tune it out cause she knows she basically screwed up now at this point and believes everyone's fate is sealed, so why bother planning what you cant control?

    [chours]

She said if this is the nightlife Id rather stay in
You call this a good time I just call it a trip
If this is as good as it gets then Im packing up my shit and Im gone

*she looks around and realized that all the partying/debotchery, isn't what it's cracked up to be. What they think is "fun" is just the a mirrage of drugs/achohal/etc. With the bad kids on the path to destruction and the good kids too far ahead theres nothing left but for her to runaway.

    [chours]

Hope you think it's good, any feedback?

God, as a teenage girl I find that line horribly depressing. Because if your high school years are supposed to be the best years of your life, I suspect most people have pisspoor lives.
