"Adrift" as written by and Jack Hody Johnson....
Your voice is adrift I can't expect it to sing to me
As if I was the only one
I'll follow you, a leaf that's followin' the sun

When will my weight be too much for you?
When will these ideas really be my own?
'Cause this moment keeps on moving
We were never meant to hold on

This was a scene worth waking up for
When I woke up
You planted me in my own pod
Don't know why, but somehow it just feels so wrong

When you said I will be lonely
When you rise again I'll have become the sun
That'll shine down upon you
As if you were the only one

Your voice is your own I can't protect it
You'll have to sing a verse that no ones ever known
Don't be afraid
'Cause no one ever sings alone

Your weight will never be too much for me
Your ideas have always be your own
And this moment keeps on movin'
We were never meant to hold on

General CommentFirst off, this song is about two lovers that were once together and shared a deep love but for some reason are now apart
    "Your voice is adrift
I can’t expect it to sing to me
As if I was the only one"

She is so lonely, she sings..the words just pore from her heart, and they are about life and love..about the 'him' she knows is out..she just has this feeling..but she doesnt know that her soul mate really does exists..she hasnt met him yet in this lifetime.. so the songs she sings are about general songs about love and so he can't expect them to be about him..even though really they are about this love she knows is out there.....but her songs are so adrift because they have been apart for so long that he cant expect them to be about him anymore

    "I’ll follow you
The leaf that’s following the sun
When will my weight be too much for you?
When will these ideas really be my own?
Cause this moment keeps on moving
We were never meant to hold on"

They both knew that they would have to be apart for a long period of time so he told her that he would follow her like a leaf that follows the sun....quite romantic...she vowed never to forget it...to remember it even in their next lifetime. They both were insecure about losing one another becaue they are both physical people and knew that for some reason they would gain weight in the future...their next life...so they promised eachother that no matter what, you weight will never be too much...I love you for who you are not what you look like kind of a thing. again, very sweet.

"we were never meant to hold on" Even though they wished they could stay together and never let go, things had to keep moving, for the sake of everything (note these people are important figures in the world, possibly will help change the world through their love im not really sure but I know they are the two people jack ALWAYS sings about: sexy plexi, middle man, bubble toes Flake etc....), and both realize that they had to let go of eachother :-( don't worry they will be brought back together....evenutally....in time...just have to wait like a gosh darn FOOOOOOOL. Wishign and waitingbut its okay, she'll forgive him :-) because she knows it wasn't right, it wasn't time, she trust him with knowing 'their' time and when to 'tell me' because if he 'tells her he might just let it go'

"It seems to me that maybe
It pretty much always means no
So don't tell me you might just let it go " --> he cant tell her what he knows or he might ruin everything so he just sits tight like 'tree down by the water' even after all the 'silllllllly things she does' she really does do silly things :-( she'll make it up.

    but moving on...

I dont know what when you rise again I will become the sun means exactly....I think its just means when you 'rise' when you start becoming famous and do a lot of things that show your true beauty and power then I will have become the sun to shine down upon you.....to protect you...to watch over you in this scary world...'like you were the only one'. He wants to let her know that despite all of these other people 'stupid girls' that seem to get in the way....he wants her to know that she is his 'one and only' and he will become great because of her. I mean she planted him in his own pot for goshsake. and when she sets....when she goes away....he is lonely. .... she had to go away, he wouldnt let her in because he couldn't telll her otherwise he would let it go.....he's a good liar by the way. He had to, otherwise he would ruin it-----> FROM FLAKE

it is all one big movie but it is real life...these are real people jack sings about its kind of cool. like really cool.

General CommentBest song on the album. I want this as my wedding song. The song's about doubt but eventually letting go of your inihibitions and allowing to love and be loved as an individual. The way it's sang is like a lullaby; one of JJ's best !!!

General CommentIt sounds to me like a song about two people who've drifted apart.

The singer first has to come to grips with the fact that he's no longer the other person's "one and only":

    "Your voice is adrift
I can’t expect it to sing to me
As if I was the only one"

Somewhere around the middle of the song, he realizes that stuff like this happens, and that sometimes you have to just let things go, and move on.

At the end of the song, it seems like he's accepted the situation, and is 'adrift' (moving on) but the other person still doesn't want to accept. So he says :

"Your voice is your own, I can’t protect it
    You’ll have to sing
A verse no one has ever known"

Meaning that the other person also has to learn to go on, and live their life as their own.

On another note, it seems like 'Go On' (the next song on the album) relates to this song as well, further emphasizing the fact that the two people will always have a history together but they have to become their own people. The whole album is somewhat like this, Jack even acknowledged it himself by calling the album as a whole a 'cinematic adventure'.

General CommentThis song is definitely about a parent, or to me I got the vibe of a mother, but that may just be personal bias because of my connection with Jack Johnson and my mom.

So first verse, "Your voice is adrift, I can't expect it to sing to me as if I was the only one" Means to me that his mother has passed on, he can't hear her voice anymore because she's gone, but her voice now is inside him and she speaks to everyone from her former life. Like how people will feel the presence of a loved one who's passed on.

    Then,
    "I'll follow you
The leaf that's following the sun
When will my weight be too much for you?
When will these ideas really be my own?
Cause this moment keeps on moving
We were never meant to hold on"

The leaf that's following the sun is the child following the parent. The line "When will my weight be too much for you" reminds me of a mother carrying a child and then caring for them and raising them. "When will these ideas really be my own?" is referring to when will Jack be old enough to have his own ideas? When will he be grown up and be able to live on his own without his mother there to support him. The "moment keeps on movin" because life goes on and "we were never meant to hold on" because we all pass on eventually and can't stay with our family forever.

The next verse is about when we grow up and have to leave our parents and their protection. "This was a scene worth waking up for" is about when we realize we have to leave our parents and how we don't want to, but want to at the same time. "When I woke up, you planted me in my own pot", is the mother giving her child, a.k.a "the leaf following the sun", their own environment to grow and thrive in. "When you said I will be lonely", the mother tells the child that they will feel alone sometimes, but "when you wake up, I will have become the sun". The sun that gave life to the leaf and that also planted the leaf in the pot so it could grow. Your mother is the sun that gave you life and raised you and loved you and that's shown in the lyrics because she'll "shine down upon you, as if you were the only one" because you're her baby and she always cared for you. There were plenty of leaves out there, but she always paid special attention to you, as if you were the only one.

Now that you are on your own "Your voice is your own" and you have to "sing a verse no one has ever known". You have to go out and make your way in the world by singing your own song, making your own life. Even though "I (your mom) can't protect it" your mom still wants you to not be "afraid to sing, cause no one ever sings alone". Then because you are your mother's baby and always will be "Your weight will never be too much for me" because she will always love you. "These ideas have always been your own" because your mom didn't force you to believe them, she just led you to them and you found them on your own. "But this moment keeps on moving, we were never meant to hold on"

General Commenti think this song is about moving into the stages of life where the inevitable foreshadows of it all becomes relevant. like when people say "you'll find out as you get older" there are certain hurdles the majority of us face. yet you are unique, and no one can honestly tell you what will happen, "your voice is your own", so they can only guide you through events that probably will take place.

General CommentI think that this song means that you have to walk your own walk in life, but you always have friends and family to help you along the way.

"When you rise again I will have become the sun
And I will shine down upon you
As if u were the only one"

    "No one ever sings alone"

General CommentI think this song is a dialogue between two people - a parent and their child, a mentor and their mentee, or someone who's time has come and has to say goodbye (maybe it has something to do with the passing of Johnson's cousin-in-law who passed recently and reportedly who this album was dedicated to). It is a dialogue between two people where one is dependent on the other for guidance and support.

In the first two verses, the person who is dependent on the "Sun" ( the guidance figure) acknowledges that this teacher/parent has others who they must also tend to, and that he cannot be a burden forever to this role model and must learn to let go and grow on his own.

The last two verses is the role model figure responding to the first speaker and letting them know that they will always be there for that person, although that person will ultimately have to branch out and find their own way. And he lets that person know that they have always had what it takes: "your ideas have always been your own"

The middle third verse is the verse that's kind of tricky. It appears to be a melding of both voices at once, although i'm not sure of what to make of "you planted me in my own body....but somehow it just feels so wrong." Also in other versions of the lyrics that I have read, I have seen the "when you said I will be lonely" transcribed as "when you're sad I will be lonely." If anyone can contribute a clearer interpretation for this middle verse, i'm all ears!
