I stood by somebody else, and then I stood by you.
I couldn't move my legs, I didn't know what to do.
I fail to find the words, I try hard to be cool.
I'd die to hear your voice, it's sweetly ringing in the room.

I see you a surgeon in the works, what could you possibly see in me?
I lost the job I have, well pick me up at my Mom and Dad's.
And I will let you cut me up. I know you hate to see me bleed.
Is it the colour of my blood, or me incomplete?

18, they had it out for us, and we were always set for a fall.
You saved 1979, to me it was the end of the world.
Yeah right, we're safe, we're cool.
I know you always wanted more.
Pick me, we're so clean, we'll wake up when the worst is over.

Did I tell you I was premature? I'm not fit to follow rules.
I always fuck things up, I guess that makes life more interesting.
You think that I'm absurd, well certainly with you.
I am absolutely assured, I am ill conceived.

18, they had it out for us, and we were always set for a fall.
You saved 1979, to me it was the end of the world.
Yeah right, we're safe, we're cool.
I know you always wanted more.
Pick me, we're so clean, we'll wake up when the worst is over.

There is always something wrong, but I need to see it through.
I don't mean to be obsessed, I don't need to be amused.
I can't stand to be a stain, that needs to be removed.
If I sacrifice myself, then I'd know I never knew you.

18, they had it out for us, and we were always set for a fall.
You saved 1979, to me it was the end of the world.
Yeah right (yeah right), we're safe (we're safe), we're cool (we're cool).
And we were always set for a fall. Always set for a fall.

18, they had it out for us.
18, they had it out for us (and we were always set for a fall).
I know you always wanted more.
Pick me, we're so clean, we'll wake up when the worst is over.
Take me, steering wheel, to the cliff now we're going over.
Kiss me, kiss and bleed, we'll wake up now the worst is over.

General CommentI hate to be the first person and then not say something good (I do think it is an excellent song) but think that the lyrics to the second verse should say "I lost the job I had, well pick me up at my mom and dad's." And then the last line should say
"Is it the colour of my blood or me incomlete.

General CommentAs for meaning... Maybe about highschool and it's ending for them and he doesn't know what to do with his life, and he thinks it's over? It's really confusing.

My OpinionI'm probably thinking too deeply or completely misunderstanding the context, but:
This article (nytimes.com/2013/11/17/fashion/weddings/…) says things about this song that seem pretty well in line.

    -

"I stood by somebody else, and then I stood by you.
I couldn't move my legs, I didn't know what to do.
I fail to find the words, I try hard to be cool.
I'd die to hear your voice, it's sweetly ringing in the room."

For this song quote, it might have something to do with their meeting in a bar as stated in the article. Standing in a bar probably involves standing or being next to lots of people.

However, when he was next Dr. Ko (Tom's partner) in the bar, she blurted to him that she was "in the honors program at U.C.L.A. This might say something about the whole "fall in love at first sight" concept present in this verse. That fact that it wasn't something he expected a girl to say in a bar probably caught his attention.

"I see you a surgeon in the works, what could you possibly see in me?
I lost the job I have, well pick me up at my Mom and Dad's.
And I will let you cut me up. I know you hate to see me bleed.
Is it the colour of my blood, or me incomplete?"

This song quote might refer to how Ko's probably trying to aim high studying medicine (maybe related to the usage of surgeon), but Tom Thacker still wonders what she saw in him.

Ko even gave him her number during their meeting at the bar, and told him to call her if his tour bus took him to Southern California. When his band was touring there, however, Tom (probably) tried "hard to be cool" and didn't call her back. He didn't really have a clear reason for doing so, it's just that he's so used to people giving their numbers and telling them to ‘call if you ever find yourself in wherever.'

However, Ko saw the band's poster and attended the concert. This probably made the question in his mind of "what could you possibly see in me?"

The losing job part of the verse might have something to do with losing his job at a record shop or something, and merely living off his band. He probably still lived with his parents at that point.

    -

"18, they had it out for us, and we were always set for a fall."

This quote from the song might refer to at the age that Dr. Ko met Tom Thacker, and that her parents were not really approving of her listening to punk music. It can also be related to how her parents didn't approve of Tom's presentation and his profession, stating that "one of the band’s show posters depicted Mr. Thacker and his band mates angrily wielding sledgehammers." Tom was even questioned by her father about why he chose the art direction.

    -

"Did I tell you I was premature? I'm not fit to follow rules.
I always fuck things up, I guess that makes life more interesting.
You think that I'm absurd, well certainly with you.
I am absolutely assured, I am ill conceived."

This verse might refer to Tom talking to Ko about his tendancy to not follow rules, as he wanted to go to the punk-rock style of making things interesting by fucking things up. Stuff like riding bikes off into a lake, and bleaching your hair maybe. The first two lines are probably a continuation of asking her what she saw in him.

Ko tells Tom that he's absurd about thinking that he was all of that, but he continued to assure the fact that he was not wanted by anyone.

    -

"If I sacrifice myself, then I'd know I never knew you."

If Tom self-sacrificed himself to pursue a dentist profession that his parents wanted, then he would never have met Ko.

This song just have a lot of... interesting meanings. It's not very clear, but these are some of my opinions about it. Of course, stuff in the song like the usage of "1979" is pretty unclear.
