Her heart beats fast,
out of sheer pain inside,
her face is left bruised,
just from speaking her mind,
she keeps the lights low,
cuz the neighbors all know,
there's a husband next door,
who's creating a widow,
his first name is Russel,
and his best friend's the bottle,
he's a middle class man,
with a hate for his father,
and her name is Marcy,
and she's such a darling,
she wears her black eyes,
instead of fine jewelry,
but she still loves him.

La-Di-Da-Di-Da-Di-Da-Di-Da (x2)

A little girl stands on the outskirts of town,
she makes beautiful noise,
but sticks to her frown,
there's nothing around here,
that's worth fighting for,
she drinks till she's quiet,
and falls to the floor,
she's sorry she stands there,
and regrets her birth,
she's eager for love,
but lacking of worth,
the skies scream, "I hate you",
and the clouds bleed of shame,
she sits there for hours,
playing the same song again,
and no one listens

La-Di-Da-Di-Da-Di-Da-Di-Da (x4)

(everyone joins in)
La-Di-Da-Di-Da-Di-Da-Di-Da (multiple times)

General Comment(Marcy is abused by her drinking husband.)

I think the second stanza is the daughter?

General CommentHull is an amazing songwriter.
He isn't even 25 yet, right?
I heard he decided to be homeschooled for his senior year.

I think that La-di-da is the song of those who aren't loved... and those who need love.
The lyrics are pretty self-explanatory anyway. :)

General Commentthis song is so poignantly beautiful.

i love when all voices come in at the end; it gives me goosebumps.
i feel like it offers some hope to all the hopeless people in the song.

General Commenti almost feel like andy hull is gently criticizing the people he is sympathizing with. like, the chorus just being "la-di-da" to me means that he's kind of saying that we've all heard these tragic stories before, and that these people in tragic situations have the power to change them, or that those around them could help, but choose not to.

i could be wayy wrong on that, and i don't mean to sound brash...that's just kind of what i got out of it.

General CommentI think that's a very good point. He definitely sympathizes with them but wants to see them stand up and take some action.

In an earlier version of the song, he says "the music man stands on the outskirts of town" in the second verse and instead of saying "No one listens," he says "but no one loves him." In listening to that version, I always got the feeling that Andy felt himself to be the music man. I could be way off base with that, it's just the impression I got. I don't think that the first verse is necessarily related to the second as some people have said, I think it's just another example of a bad life. Either way, the situations are pretty clear but the first verse is an abusive husband and the second verse is a depressed singer/songwriter who drinks a lot. I also think that the drinking contributes to those problems.

Actually, I just realized that drinking is a factor in both cases. Perhaps this is important or maybe just coincidence.

General CommentThe lyrics for the second verse are wrong. He clearly says "he" instead of "she" and I think they are pointing out his own self-misery.

General CommentThe 5 Stories' lyrics are a bit different.

"A music man stands on the outskirts of town,
    he makes beautiful noise,
    but sticks to his frown,
    there's nothing around here,
    that's worth fighting for,
    he drinks till he's quiet,
    and falls to the floor,
    he's sorry he stands there,
    and regrets his birth,
    he's eager for love,
    but lacking of worth,
the skies scream, "I hate you",
and the clouds bleed of shame,
    he sits there for hours,
    playing the same song again,
    and no one loves him"

I personally like this version better
