"Goliath" as written by and Cedric/rodriguez Bixler....
That night I remember what you slipped in my glass
We came rewinding when
I foamed at the mouth while the lights winked at me
And now my shape is kept
The rain it can't hide, wash the pain from this hex
Is it so permanent?
Did she catch a left eye when it blinks three times
Or once just to seal you in
In your drunken breath did it stain like us
In place of poison heat
I gotta rid this world of your intention
Swap the corpse in the casket

[Chorus]
Give me that corpse please
The one that tore nightly
I really want it now
Fold the arms slowly
Don't want you to hold me
It fits just like a glove
Does he make you feel alright?

When I seep inside your truth through suspicious little coughs
You sank your nails inside a key while the door you shut closed up
The black stockings you kept smell of wet cigarette
Torn of lust that you could not keep
I have slept inside your fault to have you keep me hear on this leash
For the rest of your pets I will feed to this theft
As we consummate the vows of defeat
And when you pray for an end to this I do believe this is eternity

[Chorus x2]

Never heard a man speak like this man before
Never heard a man speak like this man before
All the days of my life ever since I've been born
Never heard a man speak like this man before
Watch me now

Say it, say it, say it loud
Say it, say it, say it loud
Hold your heavy burden
In a pocket full of drink that I have drunk
Spit the remnants in your direction
This is the closest to any kingdom that you will come

I'm starting to feel a miscarriage coming on
It's numbing a stump clearing in my throat
And I just can't lose grip of it
She fumigated my mental hygiene
I'm all out of pulse but I know you can resuscitate me

Never heard a man speak like this man before
Never heard a man speak like this man before
All the days of my life ever since I've been born
Never heard a man speak like this man before

Never heard a man speak like this man before
Never heard a man speak like this man before
All the days of my life ever since I've been born
Never heard a man speak like this man before
Watch me now

General CommentGoliath- (Old Testament) a giant Philistine warrior who was slain by David with a slingshot. OR
someone or something that is abnormally large and powerful

research lead me to.. yea, the bands myspace... where it explains the meaning behind The Bedlam and Goliath album. Seems they based the entire album off of a Ouija board (genius source of inspiration)
one section states "The Soothsayer offers them names: Goliath, Mr. Mugs, Patience Worth, Tourniquet Man. The Soothsayer offers them a story: It's always about a man, a woman, and her mother. About the lust floating between them. About seduction and infidelity. And pain. And eventually, murder. Entrails and absence and curses and oblivion. Exactly the kind of spooky shit you'd want from your Ouija."

sure i can see that in this song... lust, infidelity, murder...
TMV songs-open to interpretation, as you well know

General CommentThis song is reference to Pastor Jim Jones and the Jamestown mass suicide in 1976-8. "id never heard a man like this before" was a hymn they would sing to him in service at the peoples temple in california before they moved to JamesTown South America. the first line is talking about something slipped into a drink, which was the poison mixed with the punch which they all ingested when jones' found the FBI had heard about his acts of abuse. There were so many bodies they didnt know what to do. i think this is what cedrics trying to explain. i havent really researched any of the other songs but i heard that one off the new album was a cover song. This is it, the chorus, the hymn they sung in service.

    General Commenter, threw*.

and yes, i've heard the story is rather insane("the album that didn't want to be born"?), but hadn't heard it was derived from a ouija board. crazy. must have been a long ouija board session..

General CommentI'm not so sure if the entire song would be considered a reference to Jim Jones, I think they put that in there to give us an idea of what they went through with the soothsayer. Sometimes dealing with the unknown we are inclined to give them names of things we are familiar with. I think it's just another way that The Mars Volta is trying to portray something profoundly cryptic to the public. Doing a damn good job I must say.
