"The Drink in My Hand" as written by and Matthew Mac Donald....
I left you a note on the table
I hope it finds you well
I hope you don't hurt like you did
'Cause I'd just blame myself

And I know it's for me that I'm out on these streets
Bleeding nightly for these people I meet
But it's you who I long for when I cannot sleep
It's enough, it could drive me to drink

And I, I am almost nowhere
And I'm getting there fast
You, you're the hope in my cold stare
You're the drink in my hand

When I picked up you broke into tears
You said you weren't busy enough
I still don't know why you need me
And my broken down love

With each second that ticks your voice rings in my ears
And memories flood back from all of our years
And I tell you it's okay, there's nothing to fear
And I secretly hope I am right

And I, I am almost nowhere
And I'm getting there fast
But you, you're the hope in my cold stare
You're the drink in my hand

You're the drink in my hand
You're the drink in my hand
You're the drink in my hand
You're the drink in my hand
You're the drink in my hand

I left you last week and you told me
"Go on and follow your dreams "
I think about that lately
But still I don't know what it means

'Cause you're what I dream of when I awake alone
As I drift away, as we talk on the phone
You're all I want and that's all that I know
And I still just can't wait to get home

And I, I am almost nowhere
And I'm getting there fast
And you, you're the hope in my cold stare
You're the drink in my hand

You're the drink in my hand
You're the drink in my hand
You're the drink in my hand

General CommentI'm pretty sure this one is about a girlfriend or wife, and how the writer is feeling like he isn't good enough for her. He loves her a lot and thinks that she deserves somebody better than him.

In the last verse, it talks about how she said to go and follow his dreams, I'm assuming of being on the road. And he tells her that she is his only dream. I pretty much think that is one of the sweetest lines ever. ha

I'm still unsure of the analogy to 'the drink in my hand' though.

General Commenti think this song is about a guy who breaks up with his girlfriend and is trying to move on but is finding it difficult. "you're the drink in my hand" refers to him wanting to get back with her. its very tempting to get back with her but it may not be the best decision just like a drink in your hand, its very tempting to drink it but the there consequences.

General Commenti think this song is about how breaking up with his girlfriend is like driving him to drink, "you're the drink in my hand" because she he left he can't get her out of his head. And i don't think that he broke up with her, it seems like it was some kind of almost mutual agreement, but still not sure if they're doing the right thing kind of deal. As we can see he's regreting leaving and "can't wait to get back home" I think he's confused on whether he should follow his heart or his career, as his only dream is to be with her, but his job is calling him to be away from her, and that kind of stress can definitely lead to drinking

General Commenti think kaytahmcneil has it right.

"But it's you who I long for when I cannot sleep
It's enough it could drive me to drink"

i believe the "you're the drink in my hand" analogy means that she's like a drink in his hand, pretty much how it says it. the EP is basically about them being on the road and touring, so it makes sense to me that it'd be how she (most likely his wife) is like a drink in his hand, so he doesn't need a real one.

General CommentSince the EP is about being away from home and on the tour, i think this song is about longing for his wife. He needs her to sleep but since he can't be with her at the moment, he needs something to take her place. that is why she is the drink in his hand, because he needs a substitute for her! its a pretty deep analogy lol
