As they laid
my bones down at the crossroads
I saw my ghost
Sell my soul to the inferno
For petrol to get home.
Now each day
I sink a bit faster into my father's fate
Four packs a day
Four decades straight
Right to an unmarked grave

I used to think it would sleep [x3]

As I laid
My cross down at the bones beneath my feet
She came
The face of a saint
The voice of a sympathy
She says
"The future will be devoid of weaknesses"
Free cigarettes
For all the kids
To make small skeletons

I used to think it would sleep [x3]

I used to think
As I aged with time
That it would shut it's eyes
And just let me be
Then I'd seen it's designs
To kill and hide
Deceitfully inside my skin

I've been hunting it ever since.

General CommentThis song is so incredible.
I don't want to be wrong and sound like a complete idiot, but I personally think it's about smoking and all the people that die from it.

    "Now each day
I sink a bit faster into my father's fate
    Four packs a day
    Four decades straight
    Right to an unmarked grave"
-I think that his father may have died of smoking maybe. Or maybe he means God as his Father. Or maybe it's both. But he says "Four packs a day, four decades straight," and I think that he's saying his father smoked four packs a day for 40 years, and he's afraid that he's going to end up doing that too. And it will lead him to death.

And he continues to talk about smoking and its affetcs and everything.

    "The face of a saint
    The voice of a symphony
    She says
'The future will be devoid of weaknesses'
    Free cigarettes
    For all the kids
    To make small skeletons"
-More and more kids are beginning to smoke, and it's going to kill a large portion of them.

    "I used to think
    As I aged with time
That it would shut it's eyes
    And just let me be
    Then I'd seen it's designs
    To kill and hide
    Deceitfully inside my skin
I've been hunting it ever since."

He used to think that it would be so easy to quit, but now he realizes how difficult it is to kick a nicotine addiction. Now he sees what it is doing to his body, and he can't stop smoking.

"I used to think it would sleep!"
-Maybe he already has some smoking-induced sickness and he thought he would be able to heal, but he's finally realizing he can't? Or maybe he's once again saying that he thought the nicotine addiction would sleep, but it won't and he just can't quit. I don't know.

Like I said, I could be so far off with this, but it makes sense to me. For now, anyway. I will probably walk away, listen to it again, and realize that what I've said makes no sense at all. Haha. Let me know what you think.

My InterpretationI haven’t any doubt this song is about cigarettes.
    The first verses are of the burial of his father;
his death must have been what opened his eyes to the dangers of smoking...
    makind it a perfect opening.

the part i'm in the dark about is the woman mentioned
    "The face of a saint
    The voice of a symphony
    She says
'The future will be devoid of weaknesses'
    Free cigarettes
    For all the kids
    To make small skeletons"
at first i thought it was a love interest that was his motivation to stop smoking, but now i'm thinking the woman is smoking itself, the voice of a symphony, maybe refering to the calming, or soothing effects of smoking. i know it seems like a stretch but thats what i thought of.

my favorite part in this song would have to be the second verse that starts with "as they laid"
it picks up heavy guitar, and just sounds epic. it's what really drove in his desperation

also; I love crime in stereo one of the top, right under Have Heart

General CommentIt should be "symphony" not "sympathy"

General Commentyeah I agree with imradurnot, it seems pretty obvious this is about smoking.

    I used to think
    As I aged with time
That it would shut it's eyes
    And just let me be

i think this part follows up to the chorus "I used to think it would sleep"

it seems that his father died from smoking after all of those years and he realizes that the same thing could potentially happen to him. this is based off the lines "Sell my soul to the inferno" and "I sink a bit faster into my father's fate"

awesome song and my favorite one by CIS.

General CommentJust a thought, but after reading through the lyrics again a new meaning emerged: could it possibly be about cancer (maybe lung cancer? since its what kills people who smoke.) It makes the line "I used to think it would sleep" make a little more sense, since cancer can go into remission and come back without any warning. And then the last verse makes sense about it hiding in his skin, and him trying to hunt it out. And maybe the line about "unmarked grave" since so many people die from cancer, so he could become a statistic (but that's a bit of a stretch, probably). The only line that throws me off with this interpretation is the small skeletal, I've no idea what that means. Just an idea though.

    General CommentFree cigarettes
    For all the kids
    To make small skeletons

This seems to me to be a reference to the next generation of smokers. Youth smoking is known to stunt growth.
