"Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us" as written by and Sam Phillips....
Strange things are happening everyday
I hear the music up above my head
Though the side of my heart has left me again
I hear music up above

Secrets are written in the sky
Looks like I've lost the love I've never found
Though the sound of hope has left me again
I hear music up above

Standing in my broken heart all night long
Darkness held me like a friend when love was lost
Looking for the land that's hidden in the cross
The finders love
I know I loved you too much
Ill go alone to get through

I hear Rosetta singing in the night
Echo's of lighting shine like stars after there gone
And tonight shes my guide as a girl on the moon
With the music up above

    General CommentSister Rosetta Tharpe was a Gospel singer in the 1930s-40s who pretty much pioneered combining traditional spiritual lyrics and secular rock accompaniment. Some of the songs she is best known for are "Strange Things Happening Every Day," and "Up Above My Head." Thing is, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss made it low-tempo, even including a little Tarantella, but Sister Rosetta's music was very up-beat and tempo and very Rock-n-Roll, just with Gospel lyrics. I think that is the biggest reason I like the song- the difference between the real woman and how Alison is singing.

    General CommentI like this song. Those lyrics are not right.

    See what you think.

    Strange things are happening everyday
    I hear the music up above my head
    *Though the sight of my heart has left me again
    I hear music up above

    Secrets are written in the sky
    Looks like I've lost the love I've never found
    Though the sound of hope has left me again
    I hear music up above

    Standing in my broken heart all night long
    Darkness held me like a friend when love wore off
    *Looking for the lamb that's hidden in the cross
    *The finder's mark
    I know I loved you too much
    I'll go alone to get through

    I hear Rosetta singing in the night
    Echos of light that shines like stars after they're gone
    And tonight she's my guide as I go on alone
    With the music up above

    I found that version at a similar site.

    * ?
    * I am sure it's Lamb because
    * That's the finder's mark...

    John Tyndall (poem)
    ... Where the dull 'lines of ignorance lay dark He cruised,' till secret places were made clear, And on dim borders set his finder's mark. ...

    General Commenti think this song has a gypsy-mystic feel to it. it's my favorite off their new album....as to the meaning, i think it has to do with the feelings we have after a heartbreak. in the song, sister rosetta seems to be a guide to help guide her feelings
