"Pieces of What" as written by and Andrew Vanwyngarden Ben Goldwasser....
When the world has turned
Paralyzed and wrong
Cold blooded claws
Never offered anything at all
Past the point of love
Shattered and untied
Waiting to pick up the pieces
That make it all alright

But pieces of what
Pieces of what
Pieces of what
Doesn't matter any more

Moonlight on my floor
Shining through the roof
They got the city surrounded
As if I needed proof
I forgot my fear
Feelings on the rise
Burying all of the pieces
Falling from the sky

But pieces of what
Pieces of what
Pieces of what
We used to call home
Pieces of what
We used to call home

When I drank your tea
And shallow water still
At the Belgian gates
I waited for my meal

General Commentthe song is not a break-up song.

this song is a description of war like many of there songs. listen to the last verse that says, "lay your dragon's teeth in shallow water still". dragon's teeth are what the soldiers put in the water to stop tanks from coming to shore.

"moonlight on my floor shining through the roof they got the city surrounded as if i needed proof". this line is about looking up into the sky through a whole in the ceiling and watching as everything gets demolished and blown up.

General CommentI'm falling for this band

Maybe can offer some light on the last verse.

it refers to military blockades. (thank you wikipedia)

    lay my dragon's teeth
    - are concrete road blocks

    and shallow water steel
    - found references to steel being layed on beaches to sink invading boats

    at the Belgian gates
    - 'Belgain Gates' are anti tank obstacles

    I'm waiting for my meal

    General Commentwoodmanxxx....

About the last verse. "lay my dragons teeth in shallw water still" I thought that is what he was saying the first time I heard it. Then I read several versions of the lyrics that said differently.

Personally I was bummed that it wasn't what he said.

General CommentThis is one of those songs that express an emotion you can't pinpoint exactly.

Dissapointment and loss of faith in humanity. Hurt but you don't know what you were expecting in the first place.

General Comment'yellow birdd' got the basic point of most, if not all, MGMT songs. Emotion you can't pinpoint exaclty, it either up to you to understand yourself or find out more about what they could be talking about..

which is pretty much what 'kathlee00' said. XD

Still, I hope MGMT don't become mainstream! It's their indie (songs too) we loved, not their popularity!

General CommentI think this song is about just being drained from any situation or relationship. Like youre fighting a battle when it says,

    "when the world has turned
    paralyzed and wrong
    cold blooded claws
    never offer anything at all"

i think this means that everything is just up in the air and you know that anger isnt the anwser to it

    "past the point of love
    shattered and untied
waiting to pick up the pieces
that make it out all right"

I think this part is about just being totally empty and just waiting to see where this fight will end and what will be left when its all done

    "but pieces of what
pieces of what, pieces of what
    doesn't matter anymore"

these lines say that what you have when its all done wont have any value anymore, it wont be of any meaning because whatever this battle was, that relationship or situation was your life and nothing will ever be the same.
