Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky tacky
Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes all the same,
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

And the people in the houses
All went to the university
Where they were put in boxes
And they came out all the same
And there's doctors and lawyers
And business executives
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

And they all play on the golf course
And drink their martinis dry
And they all have pretty children
And the children go to school,
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university
Where they are put in boxes
And they come out all the same.

And the boys go into business
And marry and raise a family
In boxes made of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same,
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

General CommentLittle boxes was first written by Malvina Reynolds then covered by nearly 40 artists. The song was written on a drive through Daly, California when the suburban area was being constructed. She saw a row of houses, told her husband to take the wheel and wrote this song.

General CommentMy grade 9 teacher read these lyrics to us in class from an old reading book from the 70's so then my friends and I looked up the song & just fell in love because it summed up our feelings about all the crap around us. I'll never forget that especially since it was the same year that Weeds debuted and I got totally involved with that show mainly because of this one song. Thank you so much Malvina!

My InterpretationI think this song was written with the intention of making a critique of modern society, where everyone wants to be different but we don't realize that we do the same things. I heard it for the first time on Weeds.
