When I was eighteen everything was alive
Then the planes hit the towers
Then she died, then he died

A part of me disappeared six feet in the ground
Million miles in the sky a fire burns
A fire burns, a fire burns and it is mine

And I did what I did, what we did to survive
Five whole years of my life I spent mourning you
And why? Girl, you're still alive

You're too dead to keep inside
You take the years, you keep it all
I finally think I might be alright

So let's just let it all go ?cause nothing can change
And if something is lost then there's something to frame
I just sing what I have

All I got this girl, not yet crushed by the world
I'll count the freckles on her face
One, two, three hundred times a day

And sing a new song, something I'd never hear
It's better love that I found
Bigger love that you fear

So deep inside me, hot in this frozen cave
Her fire burns, her fire burns
Her fire burns and it is brave

When I was eighteen everything was alive
Then the planes hit the towers
Then she died, then he died

A part of me disappeared six feet in the ground
Million miles in the sky a fire burns
A fire burns and I just let it all go

And I won't fear change
And if something is lost then there's something to frame
I'll just sing what I have

In the heavens above
In the song, in the sky a fire burns
A fire burns, a fire burns and it's for you

i feel like he's trying to say at least three things with this song. the first time i listened to it i instantly thought it was about 9/11 and it obviously is, but he also uses that as a metaphor for something else completely. jack dated scarlett all through high school, or so he says, until 2002. they were 18 years old at the time of the break up, i think. and probably were still together during the 9/11

"a fire burns and it is mine" - he is angry/upset/possibly lost after what happened

but five years he spent mourning over the girl and why? because she was still alive and it didn't make sense. when they broke up i figure it all added up to his loss, making it that much worse and making him that much more bitter and vulnerable. it was probably easier to blame her for literally everything than actually paying attention to what he was doing to himself "You take the years, you keep it all" - basically those years of his life were lost because he never quite moved on and he was literally fucked up in more ways than one. But now he's finally letting it all go:

"And I got this girl, not yet crushed by the world I'll count the freckles on her face one, two, three hundred times a day"

he dated alia shawkat, and she has so many freaking freckles that it's crazy. so i do believe this might have been about her. she was 18 when they began dating, and she obviously sees things differently than he does now, and she might even see things and act differently than the other girl did, despite her young age and despite the fact that she's also in contact with fame. although the whole NOT YET CRUSHED BY THE WORLD makes me believe he can't help but think that eventually she'll follow the same path as the girl before.

"So deep inside me, hot in this frozen cave Her fire burns, her fire burns, her fire burns and it is brave"

he was afraid of falling in love again, of giving all of himself and trusting someone else. but her love burns and it's brave, it probably means she's helping him break down his walls, she's bringing light and fire to his 'frozen cave'. she's giving him hope that everything will be just fine. you can see it very clearly when he mentions how everything was alive when he was her age(18) but when the plane hit the towers a fire was burning million up in the sky, he let it all go. he's not as brave as she is and he could easily do it all over again.

then it shows he's accepting the fact that things can and have changed, and now there's a new fire burning in the sky and it's all her and all for her, this new girl. the one who gave him love again, who made him come alive.

    SORRY this is so long.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
