I followed your rules
A willing fool
Branded by shame

My soul suffers from your hostile ways
I bear so many scars, hit me hard
Time to change we have to rearrange
For this has gone too far, way too far

Creating new laws and living by unwritten rules
Restricting us

My soul suffers from your hostile ways
I can't let go

Creating new spins on ancient creed to fit your views
Denying us

You created this world
Where honesty is not allowed
You created this world
Where ignorance is being taught

You created this world
Where I am all, you'll never be
You've been drilling these
Such falsely-based philosophies
…in me

The curtain has fallen
There's no one behind
Corrected one mistake
But I am still around

Our fight is over
My scars will leave a stain
You thought that it was all easy
But I will still remain

You created yourself
Based on nothing else but lies
You created yourself
Where all your aspiration died

You created yourself
Where I am all, you'll never be
You're deceiving me
Now I am forcing you to see
… this

The curtain has fallen
There's no one behind
Corrected one mistake
But I am still around

Our fight is over
My scars will leave a stain
You thought that it was all easy
But I will still remain

Take my hand, I'm sinking, I'm reaching out for you

Can't you see what you've done to all of us?
Torturing me has no use here anymore

I followed your rules
A willing fool
Branded by shame

My soul suffers from your hostile ways
I bear so many scars, hit me hard
Time to change we have to rearrange
For this has gone too far, way too far

Creating new laws and living by unwritten rules
Restricting us

My soul suffers from your hostile ways
I can't let go

Creating new spins on ancient creed to fit your views
Denying us

The curtain has fallen
There's no one behind
Corrected one mistake
But I am still around

Our fight is over
My scars will leave a stain
You thought that it was all easy
But I will still remain

Your time is over
I'm taking what's mine
You thought that you could keep me
Under your thumb and mind

Take my hand, I'm sinking, I'm reaching out for you
In my dying dream

General CommentThis song reminds me of an abusive relationship. It could be with another person, it could be with anything. But the situation described sounds very much like a controlling abusive relationship.

General CommentI can't believe there's only 3 comments on this! This song is fantastic. I think this song is about believing in someone*so sure it can be taken as a religion type of belief* but they realize the person they believed in was just a lie or just a figment of what they thought they were worthy of. torturing me has no use here anymore is an example of the person losing their affections they had of the person and thinks they just tortured them into thinking they were worth so much of their being.

'Take my hand, I'm sinking, I'm reaching out for you
In my dying dream' is saying they are trying to keep their faith in them but the dream of that happening is fading away along with them. Phenomenal song, one of my faves off The Divine Conspiracy for sure, the end is just whoa.

General CommentFor me, this tells the neverending story of how religions seek to expand themselves and make followers of everyone, destroying an nobelievers in thier wake, but never really succeeding in totally destroying doubters because, no matter what they did, there was always at least one person that looked beyond the ignorant little story that the religion taught to try to find another answer.

General CommentIn one interview Simone said this song is about a muslim woman who fell in love with "non-muslim" guy and got pregnant from him. Because of that her brother killed her to "wash away the shame" from their family. This case represents a whole bunch of unnecessary tragedies caused by fundamentalists and like the other parts of The Embrace That Smothers shows us that we must change our priorities and views and as they said in Consign to Oblivion "free ourself from madness".

Song MeaningActually, Simone said what the song was about in an interview: "Death Of A Dream" is about the position of women in the Islam society, that they are not equal to men. That they are speaking out for themselves. The main character in that song is a young girl, a Muslim who got pregnant by her boyfriend who is not a Muslim and her father killed her. That's how the song title came about, "Death Of A Dream"."

General CommentAll "The Embrace that Smothers" Parts deal with religion as far as I know! I think the text fits perfectly into religion, it just says how much religion can manipulate people in negative ways! But the text is a bit more complex, maybe someone can make a better analysis ;)

General CommentSounds to me like someone who used to be a believer but has then realised that their dream of a god wasn't real after all.
