Marched from a burning ship into a rained out parade
With a bottle and a bible
The dregs are armed to the teeth
We trade distinction and praise
For the tedious claim that we were wed in the trenches
While college boys pine for loveless exchange

We carry the fragments from detonated eyes
Embedded under our bones
We've spilled blood for the sake of fitting skin to the frame
But our money's no good here
And our memorial has veered off the road

The locals will bury my wandering eyes
At the docks of the potters field
Where the rifles of ranking men
Are equipped with 21 silencers

At 'em boys, give 'er the gun
At 'em boys, give 'er the gun

I'm the richest man in town
I'm the richest man in town

Faith, stand down
Give your wings to the boredom that resurrected my soul
Crash the car if the motor won't turn over
Glory be to God

Jumped from the disloyal waves back up to the bridge
Renounced the warmth of the turbulent grave
I found blood on my lips from a covetous kiss
And I hope that my home tips its glass to it

General Commentiight, ill take this one.

a Leatherneck is a Marine. The Marines are a Branch of the Navy(Talking U.S. here)

(Marched from a burning ship into a rained out parade, With a bottle and a bible)
so we're bailing from a burning ship, Both Religion, and Booze, play a huge role in a military lifestyle, Stress relief and whatnot.(lil' ironic on that one)

(We trade distinction and praise, For the tedious claim that we were wed in the trenches, While college boys pine for loveless exchange)
We've traded our good name, to say that we were (Permenantly joined?) during battle. while college kids look for one night stands that mean nothing

    Next paragraph

"We carry..." (The mental Anguish of having to kill people)
"We've Spilt blood..."[killed] (to be remembered but we wont be, they dont want to remember us, and any idea of it has crashed)

(immediatly after our return EVERYTHING has changed, and now we are the bad guys, as if we had never existed in our own home town (The locals will bury my wandering eyes[Dont even look, we are the enemy], At the docks of the potters field[we're coming from a ship i figure thats the first place we're gunna come to])

(Where the rifles of ranking men, Are equipped with 21 silencers) The honorable homecoming we wanted, has been replaced with a disgraceful, hidden from our families, execution.

(At 'em boys, give 'er the gun, I'm the richest man in town) If memory serves, this is combining IAWF's main character chasing his wife(who doesnt know him because he, at the point, doesnt exist) with the richest man in town(the hooker shop owner i believe). the richest man telling her to kill him.(This is a rough one)

(Faith, stand down, Give your wings to the boredom that resurrected my soul, Crash the car if the motor won't turn over, Glory be to God)
Not so sure, it seems he is Demeaning the angel(The boredom) sent to help him even though it saved his life[resurrected my soul](still talking IAWL) he crashes his car in the movie, but im not so sure about that line, he was shitcanned(drunk) when he crashed it.

(Jumped from the disloyal waves back up to the bridge, Renounced the warmth of the turbulent grave, I found blood on my lips from a covetous kiss, And I hope that my home tips its glass to it)
Unfortunately thats about all i got... It seems he takes back his plan to kill himself, and the kiss from this girl is a promise, hopefully, it will be accepted by the family

I think i did alright, but im pretty sure im missing something.

Good call on the It's A Wonderful Life Reference

please excuse my lack of a solid template. lol its a bit haphazard.

Song MeaningOh! Here's one I've figured out by myself.

He's referencing 'It's a wonderful life' in a lot of things.

    - "I'm the richest man in town"
    - Pottersfield
    - Our money's no good here
    - Give your wings to the boredom that resurrected my soul
    - Crash the car if the motor won't turn over
    - Jumped from the disloyal waves back up to the bridge

Keith said in an interview that IAWL is one of his favorite movies.
Don't know what the lyrics mean though :P

General CommentTo me, it seems like the song is about someone who enlisted for glory, and saw horrible things, and bad did things because it is what he was supposed to do for his country but then he returns home to basically feel like he was forgotten about or left behind. The part about the bridge is him redacting the desire to kill himself, the covetous kiss being the will to live, and his family tipping their glass is him hoping people appreciate that he didn't go through with it.

    Just my thoughts
