Elphaba!
Why couldn't you have stayed calm for once,
Instead of flying off the handle!
I hope you're happy!
I hope you're happy now,
I hope you're happy how you,
Hurt your cause forever,
I hope you think you're clever!

I hope you're happy,
I hope you're happy, too,
I hope you're proud how you,
Would grovel in submission,
To feed your own ambition.

So though I can't imagine how,
I hope you're happy right now,

Elphie, listen to me. Just say you're sorry.
You can still be with the Wizard,
What you've worked and waited for,
You can have all you ever wanted..

I know,
But I don't want it,
No - I can't want it.
Anymore.

Something has changed within me,
Something is not the same,
I'm through with playing by the rules,
Of someone else's game.
Too late for second-guessing,
Too late to go back to sleep,
It's time to trust my instincts,
Close my eyes, and leap!

It's time to try
Defying gravity,
I think I'll try
Defying gravity,
And you can't pull me down!

Can't I make you understand?
You're having delusions of grandeur.

I'm through accepting limits,
'Cause someone says they're so.
Some things I cannot change,
But 'til I try, I'll never know,
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love I guess I've lost,
Well, if that's love,
It comes at much too high a cost!

I'd sooner buy,
Defying gravity,
Kiss me goodbye,
I'm defying gravity,
And you can't pull me down.
Glinda - Come with me.
Think of what we could do-
Together.
Unlimited,
Together we're unlimited,
Together we'll be the greatest team,
There's ever been,
Glinda,
Dreams, the way we planned them...

If we work in tandem;

There's no fight we cannot win,
Just you and I,
Defying gravity,
With you and I,
Defying gravity,

They'll never bring us down!
Well? Are you coming?

I hope you're happy,
Now that you're choosing this,

You too-
I hope it brings you bliss.

I really hope you get it,
And you don't live to regret it,
I hope you're happy in the end,
I hope you're happy, my friend.

So if you care to find me
Look to the west end sky,
As someone told me lately;
"Everyone deserves the chance to fly!"
And if I'm flying solo,
At least I'm flying free,
To those who'd ground me,
Take a message back from me,
Tell them how I am,
Defying gravity,
I'm flying high,
Defying gravity,
And soon I'll match them in renown,
And nobody in all of Oz,
No Wizard that there is or was,
Is ever gonna bring me down!
I hope you're happy!

Look at her, she's wicked!
Get her!

Bring me down!

No one mourns the wicked,
So we've got to bring her-

Ahhh!

Down!

I saw Wicked on Broadway in New York in the spring. This song was by far the most powerful. Unfortunately, Idina Menzel was not playing Elphie, but it was still just as good. There is so much power both in the music and vocals of this song, it gives me goosebumps everytime.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

When We Were Young
Blink-182
This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.
