Morning light on the ground
You're lost hoping to be found
A pretty storm in between a big plan and an iron will
But, no you're never going anywhere with me

Summer lies in the ground
See their faces as they gather round
Crying out in anger and shame
A life spent waiting all in vain

Look what they did to the glow of the sun
Look what they've done to the city when you were gone
But, no you're never going anywhere with me

Such a sad song
The love you had is gone
The story has been told a million times and they're all wrong
If you can prove them wrong they wouldn't act so proud
Like you said: “You get what you deserve,
well I must have been a devil
‘Cause look what they did to the glow of the sun
Look what they did to the city when you were gone
You know I'm never going anywhere without you…”

You know I'm never going anywhere
You know I'm never going anywhere
You know I'm never going anywhere
You know I'm never going anywhere

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
