Drank away the rest of the day
Wonder what my liver'd say
Drink, it's all you can

Blackened days with their bigger gales
Blow in your parlor to discuss the day
Listen, it's all you can

[Chorus]
But don't, don't sink the boat
That you need, you build to keep afloat
No don't, don't sink the boat
That you built...

Sick and tired of what to say
Jumped away from the ball and chain
Breath, it's all you can

Rambling years of lousy luck
You miss the smell of burning turf
Dream, it's all you can

[Chorus]

Singled out for who you are
Takes all types to be a man
Feel, it's all you can

Filthy suits with bigot ears
Hide behind their own worst fears
Live, it's all you can
It's all you can
It's all you can... Do

No matter where I put my head
I wake up feeling sound again
Breath, it's all you can

Tomorrow smells of less decay
Beats the bows that bloom the fray
Be thankful, it's all you can

But don't, don't sink the boat
That you built, you built to keep alfoat
But don't, don't sink the boat
That you built, you built to keep afloat
But don't, don't sink the boat
That you built, you built to keep afloat

No don't, no don't sink the boat
That you built,
We all built to keep afloat

A ripe old age
A ripe old age
I'm a ripe old age
That's what I am

Ripe old age
Ripe old age
A ripe old age
Just doin' the best I can

A ripe old age
A ripe old age
A ripe old age
That's what I am
A ripe old age
A ripe old age
A ripe old age
That's what I am
Just doin' the best I can

The best I can...

I'm guessing the album you got was a leak from the internet. Either way, half of the lyrics on here are completely different from the final album version of this song...

Anyway, the song is saying to the listener not to give up, and to keep your boat afloat. In his ripe old age, he's saying not to give up on life, even when times are bad, because tomorrow will be better.

its about a friend of the bands, he was going through rough times and with a bay on the way. so its about not quitting and keeping your head above water. (they explained it at a concert, which btw was friggin amazing)

I kinda figure it's about a pisshead in a pub who spends their entire life in the pub listening and observing everyone who comes in. Who's life is utterly meaningless to most people, but someone is telling him to hold on and keep afloat because it's not meaningless.

@Kuririna - I'm thinking either a "advanced" album that he got the lyrics from OR that he couldn't understand the exact words, because some people just can't make out the difference of a person with a bit of a irish accent.

I'm a very paranoid person. I worry way to much and i stress about allot. I also have many regrets as well.

This song really helps me though when i feel stressed, or miserable. It helps me put aside the regrets. :]

    My Interpretation

i realy think its about how life will give you things in which you think you cant take, but no matter what you must keep on trudging on. at the end when he said "a ripe old age" i thought to myself that even when your life is almost at its end you still have to keep on keepin on. in an overall lookthrough the song in my mind is interpreted as a song about how one must never give up his/her goals. even when the goals are sooo far from their eyesight.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
