"Dead + Rural" as written by and Dan Boeckner Alexei Perry....
I will return there
I will return there
to a deal and rural town
to a dead and rural town

i got friends there
i have some friends there
wheels just spinning in the ground
wheels just spinning in the ground

there is light there
there's some light there
it ruminates with history
there's friends all around

hunrgy hearts there
hungry hearts there
beating life, repeating sound
beating life, repeating sound

there's emotion in the eye
then a color in the sky
there's no worry to be found
beating life, repeating sound

living in a safe, drop and roll
living in a safe, drop and roll
living in a safe, drop and roll
living in a safe, drop and roll
living in a safe, drop and roll
living in a safe, drop and roll
living in a safe, drop and roll
living in a safe, drop and roll

General CommentI think this song is about leaving a dead-end town and moving somewhere better. When you return home and see everyone you grew up with, they're just doing the same old shit they've always done. But there are still some good things about it, and some good people.
I always thought the line was 'feeling life repeat itself' instead of 'beating life, repeating sound', but listening now, I can't decide...

General CommentHow are there no comments? This is a propulsive masterpiece. Life should be replaced with locked though.

General CommentBrilliant song! The band played a fantastic show in Aarhus, Denmark last night. When Dan presented the song he said that it was about going to a high school where your nickname is "faggot". He was quite drunk, but I think he meant it

General CommentThere's just so much about this song that makes sense when I have the lyrics laid out like this. I grew up near where Dan grew up, so just getting out of high school I definitely can relate to what he's saying in this song. It's about leaving the dead end town you grew up in, and it didn't treat you very well so you're not sad to leave. Moving to somewhere or some idea of something that is supposed to be better than what you left behind, but considering the rest of the album's imagery about big cities and decadence and all that, living in the big city is not much better than the place that you left. The second stanza, the line "wheels just spinning in the ground" is an incredible line, on the surface, I liken it to the trucks that everyone drives during high school in rural communities, and they spin in the ground on the back roads. It also stands for the friends the narrator has, who are just spinning around in a circle, "doing the same old shit they've always done," to quote zaius above. I believe the last line that repeats is actually, "living in a city is drop and roll" or something, I know the word "city" is in there, kind of bringing together the fact that after having a shitty childhood in somewhere where nobody wants you and not able to wait to get the hell out of that town, the big city is just as bad, if not worse.

General CommentCorrected Song Lyrics(These are based on his lyrics being easier to understand when sung live versus the CD-Version):

    I will return there.
    I will return there.

To a dead and rural town.
To a dead and rural town.

    I've got friends there.
    I've got some friends there.

Wheels just spinning in the ground.
Wheels just spinning in the ground.

    There is life there.
    Theres some life there.

    That illuminates their history.
    There's friends there, all around.

    One Hundred hearts there.
    One hundred hearts there!

    In a life repeating sound.
    In a life repeating sound.

There's a motion in the eye.
And a color, [Not sure on this one, but it's not In The Sky as above]

Theres no money to be found.
    In a life repeating sound.

Just living in the cities typing row!
Living in the cities typing row!
Living in the cities typing row!
Living in the cities typing row!
Living in the cities typing row!
Living in the cities typing row!
Living in the cities typing row!
