"August Is Over" as written by David Katz, Travis Clarke and Sam Hollander....
Say a prayer
The summer nights are dead
The fall is coming
We were careless hearts
Who got caught up in this

You were shy
To the night you drove me wild
And you crashed into me
And I won't lie
I wish it lasted a lifetime

Please stay-ay-ay
Won't you stay-ay-ay
Tonight

Breathe in deep
And say goodbye
The saddest song
I'll ever write
For anyone, anytime

Breathe in deep
Before I say
I can feel us slip away
You're almost gone
You're good as gone
August is over

No wait
Cause August had to end
All our bags are packed
Just two broken hearts
That got caught up in this

I deny
That tomorrow you'll be gone
And so far from me
It's something strange
Never love the same way

Please stay-ay-ay
Won't you stay-ay-ay
Tonight

Breathe in deep
And say goodbye
The saddest song
I'll ever write
For anyone, anytime

Breathe in deep
Before I say
I can feel us slip away
You're almost gone
You're good as gone

We can try to drown it out
But it never stops breathing
We can take it all in
But it never slows down
We've come down from that cloud

Well say-ay-ay
What you gotta say-ay-ay
Please say-ay-ay
What you gotta say
Whoa-a-oh-oh
Whoa-a-oh-oh

Breathe in deep
And say goodbye
The saddest song
I'll ever write
For anyone, anytime

Breathe in deep
Before I say
I can feel us slip away
You're almost gone
You're good as gone
August is over
We're not the reason
August is over

General Commentthis song reminds me of this summer. i met this kid and we were together all summer. he lived over 500 miles from me. so as soon as i had to leave for school it was over. there was nothing we could do about it. it was probably the hardest thing i had to do. it was the closest i had come to loving someone. it ended as quickly as it started.

this song always reminds me of that summer. def. one of my favorite songs.

General Commentand now i want to make an extended answer.
    "The summer nights are dead
    The fall is coming
    We were careless hearts
Who got caught up in this"
summer's over, along with the summer fling.

    "You were shy
Till the night you drove me wild
    And you crashed into me
    And I won't lie
I wish it lasted a lifetime"
the beginning of the summer fling.

    "Please stay
    Won't you stay tonight?"
    self explanatory.

"Breathe in deep and say goodbye
The saddest song I'll ever write
    For anyone, anytime
Breathe in deep before I say
I can feel us slip away
    You're almost gone
    You're good as gone
    August is over"
    the fling is over.

    "Now we wait
    Cause August had to end
    All our bags are packed
    Just two broken hearts
That got caught up in this"
they're heartbroken that their relationship ended.

"I deny that tomorrow you'll be gone
    And so far from me
    It's something strange
    Never love the same way"
he'll never forget her cause he never had a fling like the one he had with her.

"We can try to drown it out
    But it never stops breathing
We can take it all in
    But it never slows down
We've come down from that cloud"
we can try to slow down and drown out time, but it never stops, so they came down from "cloud nine" and everyone knows that means love, or relationship, or however you put it.

"Well, say what you gotta say
Please say what you gotta say
    Whoa-oh, oh
    Whoa-oh, oh"
say what you need to say cause its over.

    "We're not the reason
    August is over"
    its not us, its summer.

    i feel smart now (:

General CommentThe idea of a summer fling is a typical one, but this song is really unique, and carries so much power and emotion. Let me break it down.

    "Say a prayer
    The summer nights are dead
    The fall is coming
    We were careless hearts
Who got caught up in this"
-The summer is ending. They were carefree and foolish and fell in love, and now they have to face the end.

    "You were shy
Till the night you drove me wild
    And you crashed into me
    And I won't lie
I wish it lasted a lifetime"
-She was hesitant, but he fell madly in love with her, and she gave it a chance. Now he doesn't want it too end.

    "Please stay
    Won't you stay tonight?"
-She's leaving, the fling is over. And he desperately wants her to stay.

"Breathe in deep and say goodbye
The saddest song I'll ever write
    For anyone, anytime
Breathe in deep before I say
I can feel us slip away
    You're almost gone
    You're good as gone
    August is over"
-Fairly self-explanatory. The first two lines are possibly the most powerful in the whole song. I think that "breath in deep and say goodbye" means that he is about to break down and cry, but he's trying to stay strong and let her go. He's heartbroken and this song shows his sadness. They were trying to stay together, but it wasn't working out and the summer fling dies with the end of the month.

    "Now we wait
    Cause August had to end
    All our bags are packed
    Just two broken hearts
That got caught up in this"
-The first verse that shows that she is heartbroken about it ending too, but still is leaving.

"I deny that tomorrow you'll be gone
    And so far from me
    It's something strange
    Never love the same way"
-He doesn't want to think about the fact that she will be gone tomorrow. He'll never forget how he loved her, and no one can ever really replace someone you loved.

"We can try to drown it out
    But it never stops breathing
We can take it all in
    But it never slows down
We've come down from that cloud"
-They are trying to keep time and other forces from pulling them apart, but they just can't. It's not the same anymore, and it won't ever be again.

"Well, say what you gotta say
Please say what you gotta say
    Whoa-oh, oh
    Whoa-oh, oh"
-I think he's saying that he just wants her to tell him how she feels, that it's better for him to know the truth and get over it, then for her to make up an excuse or try and avoid saying it straight up.

    "We're not the reason
    August is over"
-It's not her fault, and it's not his. But the summer is over, and it just can't work anymore.

Sorry that was so long. I love this song, it makes me so sad, yet so happy every time I listen to it!

General CommentThis reminds me of the notebook, for obvious reasons. Even how it's called "August is over", there's a part when fin says "summer's over it's time to go home". It reminds me of that.
